Hey all, can you use FG400 on Gelcoat?

I've got a boat to do, oxidized a bit outside. I've got some Meg's Oxidation remover and I'm planning using my PC DA with the tangerine foam pad.

I'm wondering two things... do I use a rotary instead of the DA and can I use FG400 on it or just stick with the Meg's.

What you think?

Either one will work fine. You will probably not need to use the rotary. I've done tons of boats and very rarely have to pull out the rotary. Just because you can get super aggressive with gel coat doesn't mean you will need to.

I've never had success using a DA with boat gelcoat. I've always stuck to a rotary with wool pad, but you can definitely try both.

Thx fellas.

I'm resisting the urge to buy a rotary.

I'd really like to stick to my DA but if gonna be a big fail ill just buy the DeWalt and go with it.

This guys boat isn't terrible so I'm hoping a DA will be enough. Ill start a new thread after Monday then post my pics of the results.

Couldn't find the Meg's one step so I bought the Oxidation Removal product. I'm assuming ill need to wax over that after?

You could try the new DA wool pads.

Cant say it enough man - a rotary will produce MUCH better results on gelcoat - we do it everyday! It is even hard for us to use a DA on the last step - rotary finishes better on gel IMO. To produce TOP NOTCH results - learn the rotary man for sure :dblthumb2:

I must work on very strange and unique boats. My rupes 15 with cutting pads gets fantastic results on boats.

Just talked to a guy on facebook the other day - and he says that his Rupes cut better than his DeWalt - which is amazing in my book! I have not had experience with the rupes yet - but have used just about every rotary and most DAs - but I am hoping that the rupes will be on our next purchase order :dblthumb2:

This is our pure rotary work on gel :

Wow. Incredible work and results.

That's what I'm looking for.

I want to get more into boats but I suspect more tools and technique are necessary. What would you charge for such a job?

I've seen a wide range of anywhere between $12-62/ft (length overall) plus an extra $4-6 /ft for the interior detailing as well.
