This past weekend, reigning NHRA Comp Eliminator World Champ Bruno Massel captured his first Win of 2013 at the NHRA Lucas Oil Series Event in Cordova, IL.

In Cordova, Massel got behind the wheel of his venerable Turbocharged Chevrolet Cobalt for the first time this season and picked up right where he left off in 2012. After qualifying #1 and defeating 2012 Championship Runner-up David Billingsley in the first frame, Massel rolled past the competition and into the final where he met up with #2 qualifier Mark Kirkman. Massel left first with a near perfect reaction time and never looked back to get the victory.

While its late June, Massel has only competed at a handful of events thus far due to scheduling and weather conflicts, but the Champ looks to be heating up at the right time. This weekend, the NHRA tour heads to his home track in Chicago for the Route 66 Nationals and the prestigious JEGS All-stars event.

As the defending Champion in both events, Massel is looking to ride last week’s momentum to another “double-up” victory in 2013. “We’ve been fortunate to win the JEGS All-Stars event 3 of the past 4 years, as your literally racing the best eight cars from across the country, but to double up by winning the Route 66 Nationals title the next day, that was truly special,” said Massel. “It’ll take a special performance from the Autoeek.net / MAV-TV Chevy Cobalt to repeat last year’s glory, but we’ve got the car to get the job done, now we just need lady luck on our side to make it happen.”

Coverage of the NHRA Lucas Oil Series from the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 Nationals can be seen on July the 7th at 6:00pm ET on ESPN2.

Congrats Bruno! :props:

If I'm home, I'll definitely be at the Chicago races.
