View Full Version : 2010 VW GTI - 2 step paint correction & Opti-Coat by Mr. Sparkle Detailing - Long Island

Earlier this year I had done a 2 step correction with Opti-Coat on a white VW Golf R. The client was very happy and told his friend with a GTI that he needed some Mr. Sparkle action. After speaking to him and discussing some options, we agreed to a 2 step with Opti-Coat.

As always, started off with the foam gun. Followed this up with CarPro TRIX and Clay Magic Blue.

Took some paint measurements and found healthy amount of paint all around. Dead center of the hood at nearly 200 microns.

Turned off the fluroscent lights so I could really see things with the LEDs on. Moderate swirling all around with some problem areas with deeper RIDS.


Some of the deeper scratches required the rotary + purple foamed wool and megs M100. But for the most part the correction was:

Megs MF pads + D300 / M101 mix
Lake Country white pads + Menzerna SF4000

took care of the taillights while I was back there

The black side pillars were very soft and very swirled. They also weren't metal panels, so the highline meter wouldn't read it. Bottom line, I had to be careful here. Got it pretty close but not quite 100% perfect. Had to 3 step 3 these spots.

After the correction the car was very dusty. Washed it again, wipedown with Eraser and protected with Opti-Coat (Opti-Guard)

just a single diode par38 LED in the daylight spectrum mounted onto that photography 'boom' or whatever you call it.

I have the same LED bulbs mounted all over the garage for paint correction work. The one on the stand is to view the spots the others aren't hitting that well

Nice job!

I have black side pillars on my 350z as well. Very soft paint. I could not get them to finish without any marring.

Thanks. I've done a couple VW's with those side pillars (other makes too but I'm assuming across VW they are similar).

My fear is a strike through. they are usually pretty thin. I can get them to finish without any marring. I just cant get every last swirl out in the first place without feeling that I'm taking too much of a risk

heres another tip for doing those areas. be VERY precise taping the surrounding trim. if the tape is too far onto the black it will leave a line thats easy to see up close after the tape is removed.

Wonderful job. This is the same colour as my GTI. Certainly makes me want a full correction!
