I just detailed my car today. It had been clayed and fully polished a few months ago so the paint was in great shape. I cleaned it, used Iron X, then stripped the old Opti-Seal layer with Griots Paint Prep. Then I put on a coat of Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant. It looks really nice but my flake is not popping.

I think this is due to what Mike Phillips calls "Working Backwards" by chemically stripping the paint instead of using a Pre-Wax cleaner such as Wolfgang PPE. I feel that because of this I lost some gloss/clarity and flake pop. I am going to order PPE and try again using PPE before DGPS this time.

I had a a few questions:

1. Can I use a softer black or blue LC flat pad with Wolfgang PPE instead of a white polishing pad (Because my paint is so soft)?

2. Do you need to prime the pad with PPE?

3. I guess I can go right into WGDGPS after PPE (No cure time on the PPE right?) which seems weird because I would assume there would be bonding issues with the fillers in PPE?

4. Finally if I do this next weekend will the PPE remove the layer of DGPS that I just applied? I assume so and its ok becaue I will add another coat after the PPE.

Thanks,
Drew

By no you mean no bonding issues? BTW thanks for the help!

I went out with a halogen and I do get a good bit of flake pop but I think the PPE could get the black paint clearer and "Brighter". And it should not take a whole lot of time to apply it and DGPS.

Ok I am getting a good bit of pop, I just checked again, but I can't help but feel I lost out on some gloss by using Paint Prep to chemically strip the paint and not using Wolfgang PPE before I put on DGPS.

I thought PPE and WGDGPS work synergistically?

I believe that is correct and the instructions indicate that it is.

Yeah I thought all these type of products were "glazes" and wouldn't work under a sealant. It even says in the description for this one that it has oil in it, which would logically be something that you wouldn't want to use under a sealant unless you did an IPA wipe which would remove the "micro-fine fillers".

I can only guess that glazes like this have moved away from the #7 and P21S GEPC type of formulations more towards Wet Glaze and the Poorboy's and CG sealant-safe glazes.

I have never seen issues applying PPE prior to DGPS, from what Nick explained to me along time ago, if you keep paint cleaners and LSP's in the same "family" then all will be okay. I have even strayed and used Blackfire GEP prior to Fuzion, everything bonded and had the standard life span and look as expected. :)

So soaking pads for a few hours in powder pad cleaner would not really offer me any better cleaning than just using Wolfgang Pad Works on them a few times and rinsing them out?
