I am only getting into the whole photography thing myself, but have found the ability of a DSLR type camera to switch to full manual mode, allowing you to control all the various settings (ISO/Aperture/Shutter speed) and most importantly, to manually focus invaluable.

I recall seeing an article in which Mike Phillips recommends placing your finger right near the defect you want to photograph, so that the camera (in auto focus mode) has something to focus on.... this may help if your camera cannot be manually focused.

If you do have a DLSR, then I have found that dropping your Aperture settings down to the lower numbers.... F4 to F8 creates a shallow depth of field which in turn 'blurs out' the area outside of where you want the viewer to focus.

Hope this helps
