I'm starting to wonder about every "high quality" buffing type towel I have purchased that has borders. I'm looking at towels with cloth and satin borders and wondering how many scratches they have caused.

The other day I was buffing off wax thinking there really is no lube between the towel and the paint while removing an LSP. It's just dry towel on dry paint. Waterless and rinseless washes are different, as the towel at least has some fluid under it. But, buffing off wax or polish???

I just ordered more CarPro BOA towels, which are edgeless / borderless Korean microfiber. I plan on only using those to buff off wax.

Anyone else thinking of this ?

Are those the orange, edgeless ones? If so... I really like those ones!

Yeah. Here is one on my hood.

I was going to try the Zaino towels, but they don't have them for sale. Then I was looking at the Duragloss towels. They almost look identical to the Zaino ones from pictures, but I can't tell if the edges are sewn. They are also $12 a towel!!!

I think the BOAs may be one of the best towels out there. It's Korean MF, no borders, and $4.72 a towel.

swanicyouth, do you consider your clearcoat especially prone to scratching? All my buffing towels have some sort of border and I've not seen any scratching.

On these borderless towels, if the edges aren't sewn, do they heat-sear the edges to prevent them from fraying? That would seem to be more likely to scratch than a sewn edge.

Good question, I've never used them for drying though... They are 70/30 blend so they should work great for waterless washes and drying. And so, so, so soft.

Never had an issue with the boarders causing issues just the quality of the towel itself. If you are worried then fold the edges into the center

I'm not sure what the edges are called. There is no sign of anything (stitching, etc...) - they just end. The end of the towel feels exactly the same as the rest of the towel. No change in the texture whatsoever.

Some pics of the end of a BOA:

As for scratching - I don't know, just throwing it out there. I do have a black BMW that can get some fine scratches over time. I'm talking scratches so fine they are 100% impossible to see under anything except direct sunlight. I'm extremely careful with washing, etc.. I even blow the dust off panel to panel once the car is already clean when applying a wax.

Correcting it can be a PIA, because I have to pull it outside to check for defect removal, because the defects are 100% impossible to see inside under any lighting I own or angle I can come up with. I don't think what I'm describing really is a problem, or that there is any really solution - I think its just a fact of life of owning a black vehicle that get driven in the environment.

The car is realistically as close to defect free now as I can get it. I'm trying everything to keep it that way. I lot of people say defects come from washing, but buffing a wax off a dry car may be the cause if the towel edges scratch. Just trying to touch the paint with the best stuff possible, as not cause any marring.

I was just wondering what everyone else's take on this is, and if anyone has had any specific problems with specific towels or types of towel edges.

I've used them for wax removal. They work very well. However, for some reason with Souverän they left a massive amount if lint. So much so I stopped, switched towels, and re-washed the towel. But I've used them with other waxes that aren't as oily and they are excellent.

Not likely, unless you had a whole bunch of them. They are a soft buffing towel.
