2013 Stuart Sailfish Regatta Powerboat Races

Stacy and I went to the 2013 Stuart Sailfish Regatta Powerboat Races yesterday with VIP passes provided by my new Uncle-in-Law Rusty Sedlack from Armstrong Nautical and it was too windy and the ocean was too rough to do much racing.

Here's just one picture I took yesterday showing how rough the water was...

We're heading back over right now, the weather is better so we're hoping to get some great shots of boats racing. There's a few boats in the pit that are they same type I raced, I'm really hoping to see these have a chance to race today...

I took pictures of these first three boats in the pits yesterday, these are called V-Drive Drag Boats. They have Big Block engines that turn a driveline to a gear box called a v-drive and then out of the v-drive is a prop shaft that exits out the bottom and back of the boat.

They are very fast and accelerate very hard and fast. These three are set up to circle race instead of run the 1/4 mile.

This is the Sanger Drag boat I owned for 20 years, it's a National Title holder when it ran 122 mph in 9 seconds in the 1/4 mile. That was when Rick Baker, the original owner built and raced it. I bought the hull and put my own 402 BBC engine in it and here's how it looked after my engine install. I also had the custom high-back bucket seats build just for this boat, to this day I've never seen a set-up like this with the tall seats and tall hood scoop.

In the picture below ran 111 mph in 11 seconds. I was 23 in this picture and this was the first time I raced this boat.

My co-worker Ray let me borrow his camera with a telephoto lens so I hope the boats get to race today and if they do I'll do my best to get more pictures.

Very cool Mike. The picture of your boat sitting on the trailer looks pretty wicked.

I love boats and admire your courage to pilot a drag boat-a lot of drivers don't live to tell about their experiences!

It was wicked. Sometimes I forget about how much fun it was each summer to fire the engine up then go to the lake and tear it up...

Here's some more pictures from the Race Pit, my new Uncle Rusty Sedlack set both me and Stacy up with all the passes including a Pit Pass for me...

To get into the boat show, you park in a field next to the air port and then take a bus to the bottom of the bridge. From there you take a ride in a tram cart. You can opt to walk over the bridge but it's a long walk....

These are called New Jersey Skiffs. After owning and driving a full race drag boat for 20 years it just seems weird to sit in the back of the boat with the engine in front of you. Drag boats are set up like cars with the steering and seat in the front and the engine behind you.

I have pictures of these boats racing...

V-Drive Drag Boats...

My Drag Boat had three pedal, Down, Up and Throttle. This boat has the Down and the Throttle. With my set-up you could adjust the pitch of the boat and tailor it to the wind and the waves.

Here's the prop shaft, or driveline coming out of the V-drive. Mine looked similar to this except everything was pretty and polished, I always kep the running gear in my Drag Boat show ready.

The long aluminum plate running across the botoom of the back of the hull is called the "Cavitation Plate", this is the plate that adjusts the pitch of the boat and this is what your up and down pedals control.

To bring the bow down, (to keep you from flipping), you push the down pedal and this would actually bend the aluminum plate downward into the water causing the nose of the boat to come down. It also acts like a big brake.

To race full out, you push on the up pedal to bring it all the way up and then feather it or the down pedal to maintain a level pitch and basically fly through the 1/4 mile with just the back 2-3 feet of the boat in the water. Kind of like controlled flying... or wrecking... :D
