Nastiest Tire Ever Cleaned Up

I decided to place my full size spare on the RF. for all I know this tire was 12 years old and sat in the carrier under the truck. 12 years of dirt and never being cleaned. I believe its the tire that came with the car, as its an O.E tire. Surprisingly, once I got it cleaned up the tire wasn't cracked and in good shape. This is even after I pressured washed it on the vehicle:

Holy smokes - I've never seen such a recovery of a tire. Hard work!

Good idea to rotate that tire into use, reminds me I need to make the rounds and check the donut spares for air, etc.

PS Add a new Tuf-Shine brush to your cart, that one looks shot.

That thing is going to explode on you, I've seen countless cars that have tires that are 10+ year old, with full thread, no cracks, and BOOMBANFVDJDNAHEKRHSKAKAH it explodes

I agree. Although the tire may appear to be ok superficially, it's not going to be structurally sound anymore, at least there's a good chance it's not. I am a tire retailer and by law cannot sell a tire as new if it is more than 7 years old because the rubber deteriorates. I would be leary of driving on a tire that old.

I just used mine for the first time a couple weeks ago, I was a little disappointed at the ergonomics, especially when the handle was wet and slippery with tire cleaner.

I think those guys are over-reacting, but that's easy for me to say, I'm not driving the car. I will say I am just about to replace the tires on one of my cars because they are worn out, and they are 10 years old and none of them exploded.

Yea, good idea. A buddy of mine had a 1984 Porsche 911 with older tires that were kept in good condition. On a road trip back to Indiana he was doing about 70mph when one of the rear tires came apart at the seams. The tire was shredded, but instead of it coming off the rim, it slapped around at 70mph, shredding the rear clip of the car. My friend was able to safely get it to the side of the road. When the insurance adjuster came out - they totaled it. There was so much damage to the back end from the flailing tire that they just scrapped the whole thing. Now - the car wasn't a garage queen, it was was a daily driver and little beat down, but crap - a blown tire totaled a 911!

Moral of the story - don't run on old tires!

Not to argue this, but it is legal for you to sell a 7-year old tire, which will then be used for what, 3-5 or more years? Which would make it older than the tire the OP is driving on. If tires became unsafe to use after 7 years, then you wouldn't be allowed to sell a 7 yo tire. I'm not saying that an older tire doesn't have more chance of failure than a newer tire, but you could have a tire molded yesterday and drive out of your shop and run over something in the road and have a blowout, too.

So if you can sell a tire that is up to 7 years old, if it is 6 years and 364 days old, and it gets put on a customer's car, the next day it's not safe? If you are allowed to sell a 7 yo tire, that means there is research to show that 7 years + avg. life on vehicle after that is safe, plus some safety margin, otherwise the limit would be lower than 7 years.

I'm going to comment on the tire clean-up and not the age and/or replacement of tires (kind of a touchy subject here on AG). You did an amazing job making that tire look brand new!

Nice job on the tires/wheels , I have had my share of nasty tires.
