I saw a thread one time that said how many inches of water in a 5 gallon bucket = 1 gallon but can't find it again? Does anyone know?

It's in this article: http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/hot-topics-frequently-asked-questions/23602-how-dirty-too-dirty-safely-use-rinseless-wash.html

I'm sure it would differ with each bucket.

All i know is that 2 gallons=apprx 6" in 3or5 gal bucket.
Or just grab a 1 gal milk empty container, fill it with water and used the quantity as a reference.

This is assuming that all buckets are the segments of a column and not a cone. I have 5gal. buckets from home depot, lowes, walmart, pep boys, etc. and on several the grid guard only goes down halfway while on others it drops straight to the bottom.

Seems to me that volume should be volume but there are obviously variances in diameter... but for a rough approximation, one gallon is "approximately" three inches from the inside bottom. If I was measuring chemicals of any value, I would measure out eight cups of dried rice, beans, etc. and mark the line there to be much more precise.

As always, YMMV...

Thanks guys! I'm just looking for something "close enough" for my HD wash bucket.

On a Home Depot or Autogeek buckets, I measure close to 2-inches per gallon. It seems fairly constant to 3 gallons (6-inches). The grit guard is 2 inches (1 gallon).

The markings on the Autogeek bucket read about 1 quart higher than actual.
