Dear Shane

Claying is important.

Use tons of lube.

It all starts with a good canvas, the better the finish, the better your results will be.

Any more information on what kind of condition the vehicle is in, your budget for equipment, supplies (what do you currently have) your expectations of final results.

There are a lot of variables involved with obtaining the perfect finish or 'prep for a superior shine'.

One of the threads linked above is about getting a smooth surface being a key to gloss. I'm sure Mike Phillips has a thread about this, but for best appearance and maximum longevity of your wax or sealant, you want to have a properly prepped surface. This means, at a minimum, that you remove bonded contaminants (above surface) and embedded contaminants (below surface). You are already claying which will work on the above-surface contaminants, the next thing you would do would be to use some sort of paint cleaner to remove embedded contaminants. Depending on the condition of your paint, you would likely also be well-served to use some sort of polish to refine your finish and remove swirls and scratches.

Depending on the polish you've used, you might need to remove surface oils by washing again, an IPA wipe, or some other surface prep. Then you can apply your LSP (Last Step Product) (wax or sealant).
