Hey guys,

My Mom just bought a pre-owned 2011 Moonlight White G37x Infiniti Sedan and under the hood it has the "Scratch Shield" sticker. I do not really know how to detail this type of paint and I don't want to mess up her car.

If I understand correctly, "Scratch Sheild" is the same as "Self Healing Paint" just different wording?

I just want to know which detailing procedures are OK to perform on scratch shield paint and which procedures I should avoid.

From what I have read, I do not want to use my PC7424XP dual action polisher on the paint so as not to heat it up (I heard the surface can turn gummy if it gets heated up too much)? Becasue of this I have heard to work by hand only?

Would it be OK to clay the paint with a mild grade claybar? How about applying a "Paint Cleaner" by hand that contains a very minor amount of mild abrasives such as one of the paintwork cleaning lotions sold on Autogeek (Pinnacle/Wolfgang etc), or is the key to use NO abrasives at all? Here is an example of one of the paint cleaners I am partial towards:

Wolfgang Pre-Wax Polish Enhancer is absolutely fabulous for producing that elusive, show-ready wet-shine look. This polish actually enhances and (http://apicdn.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&key=a4dca41abd1bcf81cbfde4e36eac8a25&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myg37.com%2Fforums%2Fcar-care-and-detailing%2F244921-detailing-2011-scratch-shield-paint.html&out=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.autogeek.net%2Fwg2000.html&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myg37.com%2Fforums%2Fcar-care-and-detailing-318%2F)

Finally, I use Iron X to decontaminate my other vehicles before sealant application. Would it be OK to use this product on scratch shield paint?

The paint is in very good shape and my plan was just to wash it, Iron X it, and apply Opti-Seal if the weather is nice tomorrow and to do a more thorough job when the weather gets nicer (Something like clay, more Iron X, paint cleaning lotion and Wolfgang Deep Gloss 3.0.)

For tomorrows work I am just wondering if the Chemicals in Iron X will do something to the scratch shield paint?

Thank you in advance for any guidence!

Ask CEE DOG about the iron x question. He's the owner of carpro usa.

And as far as claying and polishing goes, do a test spot to check for any marring or worse. Japanese paints are known to be soft. You probably just have to go with a light cut pad and light cut polish combo.

I definitely wouldn't take any buffer to it, or polish it at all.

I would think clay, then a paint cleaner, no cut pad, and low speed should be fine.

I have no idea about IronX.

IronX is perfectly fine for it.

You can machine correct vehicles with self healing clearcoats. There are tons of documented details of Infinitis on Autopia and maybe even some here.

I have a Infiniti with the Moonlight white "self healing" paint and I've used both Menzerna 4000 and 4500 polishes on it. My car is always garaged and properly
washed so I've never have seen real serious scratches etc. in the paint. I applied
those polishes with my Flex 3400 without problems. I just got the new Rupes 15
buffer and plan to use it for mild polishing with theRupes fine polish included with the kit on my car as soon as spring comes. I can't say I see much difference between the self healing paint and my other cars paint.

Mark, that was my plan with clay, iron x, then apply paint cleaner with no cut pad on low like you recommended just to clean up the paint. What paint cleaner would you recommend? I am looking for NO abrasives. BTW did not recognize you at first, because no Mustang in your Avatar!

Great minds think alike! :D

I've used Wolfgang Paint Enhancer with good results. I don't think it has abrasives, but you may want to check with Nick. Dodo Juice Lime Prime LITE looks to be exactly what you're looking for(never tried it).

Mustang is gone, '08 350z should be here Tuesday!.

Why not? I have 2011 with same paint and You can use same products and buffers just like You using on any other paint. Do it test spot and go from there. If car is in good shape (like mine :xyxthumbs:) I have good results with manzerna 4000 or if You needed more power go with 2500. Good luck.

Mark be sure to post lots of pics! I'm sure you will have fun detailing it to true Autogeek standards. I just spent 7 hours today detailing my Mom's new pre-owned G37x to get it up to what I am used to! Scratch shield paint is nice, as the paint has only minimal swirls.

I was thinking PPE as well. I really like the Wolfgang line. Thanks Swanic!:xyxthumbs:

if You needed more power go with 2500. Good luck.
After doing some research, anything 2500 and finer is ok, but I wouldn't go anymore more aggressive.

Be aware that any friction heat from polishing will cause the elastic resin coating to swell, which will temporarily fill the defects, but when it cools down, the damage will re-appear. - TOWGT

Thanks Mark. The car is in pretty good shape so I'll probably just clay/iron x/ and clean it up with a non-abrasive paint cleaner on a finishing pad this spring to get it looking good!

Bet you are excited about getting your Z tomorrow!!
