Is this shady?

so we washed a customers car today (she only wanted a wash + wax + interior vacum) so we charged $20.

here is the shady part: she said that everything in the car besides the books/bags was trash and she wanted it cleared out/vacumed up. problem is that she has 3 or 4 kids in there and it was a mess, but there was like $10 of change :awesome:.

so is it shady to vacum up all the change or should we have picked it up and given all to her? :grouphug:

I pulled a $20 from between the seats of a a regular customer. I could have sucked it up and pulled it out later, but I shut my vac down, took the $20, knocked on the door, and told her. Guess what I got for a tip? $20? No... $50

problem was it wasn't a bill, it was nickles and quarters and etc....

I understand, but every time I vac, I LOOK for change. If there is a penny here and there, I most likely suck it up. I don't pick through my vac bag either to retrieve them.... If it is silver, I pick it up and throw it in the console of ashtray, or wherever they keep their change.

You never know when a customer could be testing you. Put a quarter here, put on there.... maybe a $5 bill in between the seats........just to see if you take them.....

yea i'm pretty sure she wasn't testing us, there was food and sand all over the floor (could NOT see any carpet in the back seats), and my friend babysits for them occasionally.

but yea there was no way she was testing us, i just want to know if i should've put all the change in a couple ziplock bags lol

That's why it's important to return any change to a customer. And if he/she will tell you to keep it - it's yours. Just be honest.

My thoughts on it is, always put the loose coins in the cup holder/ash tray. I feel I am being tested by the customer. JMO

Did she give it to you? I know it sucks having to clean up someone elses crap, but money is a different matter. I know you're not stealing it and she would probably never miss it, but it could start a BAD habit for you. I always try to do the right thing.

If I ever found out someone took change from my car, I would never use them again if I was a customer. Slippery slope you are heading down if you have to ask IMO. I would think most would just give it back to you if you bagged it and gave it to them. Not worth the loss in the jobs and referrals.

it's not like i took it or anything (at least not like stealing it). she was aware that there was change in the car, and she said that everything besides the books and bags was trash.

but idk, mabye next time i will take the coins out of the vac and put them in the ashtray?

just take a few minutes to take everything out. I always check under the seats for big objects and trash so I don't suck it up and it clogs my vac hose. When I find coins, I throw them in one of the front seats, and after I 'de-trash' a car, I take all the money and put it somewhere....

You must think its a bit shady or you wouldn't have the moral dilema. I do think next time you should as stated by others get as much by hand before vacuuming and put it somewhere so you can give it to them.

This is a good question, but in my opinion (and this is only my opinion) it comes down to your own morals and how you were raised up. In my scenario, I was raised up to work hard and to earn every penny I get. Besides conscience is a terrible thing hahahaha it never leaves you alone but then again we are all different. I would agree with everyone here, honestly goes a long way.

Well just my opinion.

I think when all is said and done you will do the right thing.
