New Black Tundra - Lots of Questions

I just got a new Black Toyota Tundra (single stage paint). I'm kicking myself already, but it was the one I could get with the options I wanted. The truck got delivered with what I'm finding out is the pretty typical DISO along with a few other flaws. The dealer assured me that they could fix the flaws and DISO and sent the truck to their body shop for some kind of polishing. They say they used a 3M product. I'm not sure what it was yet. In direct sun I still see some minor swirling. It almost looks like swirls in a wax layer now rather than in the paint. It looks much better than it did...

But now I see a lot of orange peel. Nobody who saw the truck before the dealer polish saw the orange peel. Take a look at the image below in full size for full effect.

Any ideas what they did? And can it be fixed? Should I insist they give me a different truck (unlikely) that they haven't ruined the paint on? Or should I just give up now? My last truck was a White 2001 Chevy Silverado that I gave up on when the paint started flaking off. I feel like I'm just starting over with paint issues again. :buffing:

Extra credit: What's my best bet for a procedure and set of products to keep this as low maintenance as possible even though it is an outdoor DD in Arizona?

First off congrats on the new Tundra!!! I have a 2011 red Crewmax & I love it!!
I would guess the first thing you will be advised about is a DA machine like a flex or porter cable.
If you are looking for a good forum for the Tundra let me know.

Thanks! It's good to hear how much other Tundra owners like their trucks. We almost walked out when the finance guy was doing the hard sell on warranties and maintenance packages. He made it sound like we were in for lots of trouble and high cost repairs.

I've been on Tundrasolutions.com for a long time because my parents have a first generation (2006) and I have asked questions about it there. I posted a couple questions about this truck there too. Are there others you would recommend?

As far as detailing machines, I'm hoping to do what I can by hand. I know a friend of a friend who owns a custom paint shop and does high end detail work. I plan to do my own hand washes and maybe use some products I can do by hand. Anything more involved than that will probably get farmed out.

I've been down the road with the Land Rover dealer. Get a good lawyer, take tons of pictures, take both with you to the dealer, and demand a new truck.

Welcome! I love your avatar and your truck! (I have a 2012 black Tacoma). I have the same paint as you (202) and do have a bit of orange peel as well. I doesn't really bother me since I could polish it to a very high gloss anyway. I used to hate how soft my paint was until I started correcting it by machine (Porter Cable 7424xp). Now I am thankful I have soft black paint. Nothing looks better imo. :props:

I was really hoping to avoid that solution. It seems like whenever attorneys get involved, everybody loses but them. When I contacted Toyota Motor Sales and told them what has happened so far, that was actually one of their suggestions. Kinda scary...

Nice truck! We got a magnetic gray metallic 4-cylinder Tacoma for my wife at the same time as the Tundra. She has a longer commute and wanted better fuel economy than the 6-cylinder Tacoma could give.

I know someone who is a die-hard Toyota fan and he says the orange peel is pretty common. I'm just surprised we didn't see it (he didn't even see it) before they did their polishing. The detailers at this dealership suck. They didn't clean the roof of the truck very well for delivery and even after telling them that it needed some attention it still looked untouched when I got it back. I'm hoping the bird poo stains aren't permanent.

Tool has been my favorite band for a long time! Maynard is just up the road in Cornville, AZ and selling wine out of his store in Jerome.

Yeah the tool guys rock!! In my world they are one of the heaviest of metal bands. I am a old school Judas Priest fan & believe me over the years I have heard a lot of bands that are a lot more like light plastic than heavy metal!!
It would be my belief that the warranty guy was just doing his job. I know so many people that have Toyotas that never have problems. Now I am not saying that they are all perfect but I believe they make a superior product than most.

Apparently the non-metallic Toyota trucks are single stage. I'm pretty sure GM does that too. My white Silverado didn't seem to have any clear on it anyway.

@Yardstick, once you either have the truck replaced or the paint corrected may I add that you take it to friend(or yourself) and apply GTechniq EXO Ultra Durable Hybrid (http://www.autogeek.net/gtechniq-exo-paint-coating.html) or Optimum Opti-Coat 2.0 Permanent Paint Coating (http://www.autogeek.net/optimum-opti-coat.html). You can also talk to him about the option to put a clear coat in your single stage paint.

TMS is telling you correctly. It's the dealers fault. They purchased the truck from TMS. TMS is out of it. Lawyers are good as long as they are your lawyers :xyxthumbs:

I ran by the custom paint shop this afternoon and got his opinion. To him it looked like more than the normal amount of factory orange peel and way more than he would let a vehicle out of his shop with, but he wasn't worried about it or what they may have done to it.

I guess the next step(s) will be to give it a good wash and do some corrections on the roof (that the dealer didn't do), then seal/wax.
