97 GMC Jimmy Correction (Multiple Rayviews) (http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/product-reviews/58327-97-gmc-jimmy-correction-multiple-rayviews.html)

I love working on old beat up daily drivers, and this weekend I got to work on a 1997 GMC Jimmy that hasn't seen a wash in a looooooooooooooooooooooong time. I was limited in time for this detail so I didn't have a chance to take too many pics, but I was excited to use a few new products.

The owner loves this vehicle, but thought the finish was too far gone to spend any time making it look better. I knew with a little time and the right products that it could look much better.

Here's a closeup of the grill that showed the condition of the entire vehicle. Contaminated, oxidized, swirled out and tons of water spots :(

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-udG5PPhiUI8/UMXrKezl1GI/AAAAAAAAGHo/0_9CkcG0M9I/s640/IMG_0785.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-dJbA-OGx7HY/UMXrLDILk3I/AAAAAAAAGHw/ZO2Y1D5Lu5E/s640/IMG_0784.JPG

Swirls galore.

Neglected wheels and tires.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-1_i46U54ItY/UMXrPoIKMbI/AAAAAAAAGII/aKYoZyER4Xc/s640/IMG_0788.JPG

The entire truck looked like it was washed with a Brillo pad.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vdzTE68Mca0/UMXra2NyTbI/AAAAAAAAGI0/BsUEAh3SBl0/s640/IMG_0793.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-f08Fm03mP6I/UMXrc2IU_II/AAAAAAAAGJE/GFtjyBLwCP4/s640/IMG_0794.JPG

I started with the shoes. I knew the tires needed serious help so I grabbed TUF SHINE's Tire Cleaner.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-WfDQ904Oeug/UMXrdwYWNhI/AAAAAAAAGJM/Eu8ZzUuCC0M/s640/IMG_0795.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--50KA_tfoQo/UMXrnKjNrII/AAAAAAAAGJo/Y2oSg8SqOVw/s640/IMG_0798.JPG

While the brown sludge was melting off the tires, I applied Wolfgang Über Wheel Cleaner (http://www.autogeek.net/wolfgang-uber-wheel-cleaner.html) to the wheels.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-aH_FtLKdJVk/UMXrq4OAxWI/AAAAAAAAGJ4/63iW-ZyOrD0/s640/IMG_0799.JPG

With a little agitation...

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-AbxcTkrbbrI/UMXrxkLtFuI/AAAAAAAAGKA/LNYe8Fsh9mE/s640/IMG_0801.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-PyZSp2IWajE/UMXrx_rdAjI/AAAAAAAAGKI/XQ3geDJbM80/s640/IMG_0802.JPG

The wheels were so bad they required a couple applications and extra agitation.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-n_ZKNSiHPkM/UMXr4i9zPkI/AAAAAAAAGKg/_aFtZU1C-vg/s640/IMG_0805.JPG

Much better.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-XbjRxT3lqXY/UMXr-n864bI/AAAAAAAAGK0/tkKaUaQnnD4/s640/IMG_0807.JPG

Now to wash the vehicle, I grabbed a bottle of Detailers Pro Series Auto Bath Shampoo. P.s. It smells like Bananas

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-0zsh9ZUbejA/UMXsFqcyUnI/AAAAAAAAGLc/W_NlMB0hHJw/s640/IMG_0811.JPG

After washing, I knew the paint was heavily contaminated because it felt like 45 grit sand paper. So I used Iron X to dissolve all the nasty stuff from the paint.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-d93NuH6ea0g/UMXsK7QGx_I/AAAAAAAAGLs/1SrkT8e23E0/s640/IMG_0813.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-U83Ozleiq64/UMXsRL8M-WI/AAAAAAAAGMI/Yc-1bUpBQCY/s640/IMG_0816.JPG

After using Iron X, I grabbed a Nanoskin AutoScrub Medium Grade Wash Mitt and Detailers Pro Series Universal Clay Lubricant. This is one of the new products I've been itching to try. I went straight for the Medium grade because of the condition of the paint and I would be polishing afterwards.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-FJhZ-MJtPa8/UMXsUAWR9pI/AAAAAAAAGMQ/j3JauAAibjw/s640/IMG_0817.JPG

After using the Nanoskin AutoScrub Wash Mitt, I'm not sure if I'll ever go back to a Clay Bar again. While moving the wash mitt back and forth, I could feel the "gritty" feeling disappear into a smooth finish.

After drying the vehicle with a Guzzler Microfiber towel, I could see the paint had already significantly improved.

On the right track!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-F1RvdS4erv8/UMXsa2j-JAI/AAAAAAAAGMs/dfOf7EUQ9FI/s640/IMG_0820.JPG

Amazing what a 2 Bucket Wash + Autoscrub can do...

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-d1dWJhlxbqA/UMXsfRXBVoI/AAAAAAAAGM8/8CCtlqyNasE/s640/IMG_0822.JPG

After decontaminating, I pulled Jimmy into the AG Show Car Garage for inspection...

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-3OzsoR1yfV0/UMYgiFra30I/AAAAAAAAGUg/Tq87pFgPe2I/s512/scratcg.jpg

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-PVtu0fM40Vs/UMXszjtje-I/AAAAAAAAGOM/HG9TwcJHdJA/s640/IMG_0831.JPG

I started with a test spot and the least aggressive method first. I wanted to use Menzerna Polishes this time with a Cyclo Polisher. I quickly learned this paint was HARD. Menzerna Super Finish (SF-4000) had no effect on the paint. I tried Menzerna SIP - Super Intensive Polish (IS 1500) and I started to see progress...but I knew I could get better results. So I used Menzerna Power Gloss Compound (PG 1000) and got great results.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-I-qIIGAMUM8/UMXuUloxo-I/AAAAAAAAGOo/BHbQy8j_iuQ/s640/IMG_0832.JPG

50/50 Hood Shot

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-BX8zpnu_0GI/UMXul3qEUkI/AAAAAAAAGQA/Mm1Ixjrw0qE/s640/IMG_0844.JPG

Before I got started on the rest of the vehicle, Nick suggested I try out Menzerna Fast Gloss Compound (FG-400); and I'm glad he did! FG-400 was thicker than PG1000 and worked faster. Surprisingly, Fast Gloss Compound got the paint glossier, faster :) .

For the LSP, I decided to go with a sealant + wax combo. I didn't have 8-12 hours to wait for a sealant to cure, so I went with BLACKFIRE Crystal Seal Paint Sealant.

The owner was ecstatic with the results. The truck looked much worse originally in person and much better after the detail.

Thanks!

I used a Cyclo Model 5 Pro with Orange Cyclo Pads on most of the vehicle and a Griots Garage 6 inch polisher with a 3.5 inch backing plate and LC 4 inch CCS pads on the smaller panels/pillars.
