I use a Rug Doctor ultra wide with the upholstery tool attachment when cleaning customers vehicle interiors. Works very well and as a bonus I can use it inside my house too
Not all that cheap really, payed $500 at costco but it works well and carpets come out very clean

have you seen that detail domain thread? I'm not sure if it's on AG or not, but it's basically using a carpet attachment on a 3" GG and getting stellar and I mean STELLAR results with it!

If you're looking for a good, cheap carpet extractor maybe you should call around to, or stop in at a few local carpet cleaning businesses. A lot of these places have several portable units laying around that they used at the startup of their businesses and quickly learned that they'd need larger units to last in the industry. Everyone enjoys a little cash for their pocket, so a lot of these business owners will sell off these units that otherwise just sit there making them no money. It's worth a few phone calls to end up with a cheap, used professional quality portable extractor.

I did this and ended up paying $220 for an older model "Castex Magnum 900" that will extract carpets near completely dry.

check Ebay & Craigslist for good used commercial spotting machines or a box extractor like Dave suggested,

Even if you find one without heaters, you can buy a $45.00 bucket heater that will heat to 180 - 190 degrees. Put it in a 5 gal bucket & wait 15 minutes & then fill the extractor & your cleaning with hot water.

I know it's not professional but Target has the smaller, portable Bissell Green Cleaning Machine for $75

I have used my GG DA with a carpet attachment with good results and then extracted with my Bissell Auto Care Pro-Heat.
