It's a GM so I think it would be the same as here
1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

Chevy Engine Firing Orders 283, 327, 350, 400, 427, 454 and More (http://www.mre-books.com/chevy/engines/firing_order.html)

If the firing order checks out ok the first order would be a compression check. Somewhere in this era GM had a problem with the cam lobes rounding as they had a hardening problem as I remember.

Thanx guys - heres the "facts" (I've been told its a buick engine with a ford transmission) BUT - the distributor is in the rear and the rotor fires counter-clock wise.... Im assuming Ford Small Block Engine - its a V-8 5.0 L - what's the consensus?

I could be wrong (not a Ford fan) but as I remember Fords distributors were in the front. Now a Buick would be in the rear. Maybe a 305 GM cubic inch ?

I would be wrong before you I think my friend! I am going from what a few diesel mechanics say at a bus company that I detail buses at. So, with that said - 81 delta 88 IYO?!?! A mechanic jacked up the firing order - and now Im left with the aftermath!

Looking at the first link the 305 distributor rotation is one direction and the 307 is the opposite. Either one is the same firing order and the distributors are in the rear. I have not owned a GM for 42 years but there has to be an engine serial # on the block, maybe some GM guys here will chime in and let you know where to look.

After checking out the various firing orders and your statement of counter clockwise distributor rotation I am betting on the 307.

If it looks something like this with an oil fill tube in the front, it's an Olds 307:

I believe you have what was known as the HEI ignition where the coil was located in the center top of the distributor cap as an oblong square object. Take a look at that first link and scroll down to the 307 cubic inch. It will show you the orientation of the cap and that oblong object in the middle is the coil. Just set it up like that and you should be good to go.

Wish I could zoom in on image - but it seems that the distributor is behind the air intake/filter/carburetor - plus the alternator is on the other side - going from memory here - but I believe what I said is correct, does this make a HUGE difference?!?!??!
