So I am just about to click on it to buy it but not sure I want to go from 6.5 to 5.5. I tried a flex at autogeek before they were even available and I know they are easier to control. I'm guessing the one inch difference is not much less area. I figure you could get more of an area accomplished with a 6.5 over a 5.5

Tell me what your thoughts are. Also do they make micro fiber kits for a smaller backing plate? Not really sure I'll ever use a micro fiber pad again but who knows.

Thanks you!! :xyxthumbs:

Hi Tom-

Of course with the Flex 3401 it is not an issue with pad rotation on larger pads as often is the case with a traditional DA. So certainly the 6.5" pads will get the job done and I do use them depending on what task is at hand.
However, the 5.5 " pads and sometimes the 4" pads are often preferable due to greater control over the machine and I like the ability to more easily work around different panels and tighter areas on vehicles.
I would recommend getting the interchangeable backing plate system for the 3401 and this way you can use several pad sizes and never be limited.
So you can use the right pad for the job every time.

Yes, the microfiber pads from Meguiars, Optimum and Lake Country all come in 3 sizes and of course you can check them all out here on AG.

I find that using 5.5" pads on the Flex 3401 adds time to a paint correction if that is all that's being used. It's nice for certain tighter areas but the machine in my opinion cuts faster with larger pads on it. I wish there were a way to crank the motor speed up more. Ive been contemplating tearing one of mine apart to see if there's some sort of pot on the speed control board that's allow for a little more speed. I seriously doubt it but when my older 3401 gets a new strain relief I'll have a look while it's apart.

I wish they made 6 inch pads...I think that would be the perfect medium!

Why not just get this instead of the 2 plates? I don't think I'd ever use the 6 inch plate.

I have that plate too and if you want to use 5.5" pads it will get the job done for sure.
