I lost the black cap and right now i just have it duct taped
Not sure what else to do !!
I need to find a cap but i wonder if it has been exposed to air longer than 12 hours if it goes bad

I did the same thing. I used a pin to replace the black cap.
I, too wondered, is there a better way?

A pin with a round head is what I used to stick in there.

I would think Chris at Optima would send you a new cap. Temporarily what your doing is probably ok...but I don't think I would try to store it like that for any amount of time...
