Hi, I have a dell dimension 8100 6 years and still ticking, windows millennium which is not the greatest operating system as you may know,,,,,

but all in all a good machine.....What helping in keeping this machine alive is cleaning the interior every 6 months.......animal hair and what ever else gets sucked in there :)

24" Apple iMac.

Upgraded Ram to 3GB, 500GB 7.2k internal HD, 1TB wireless external, nVidia 7600GT video card, wireless mouse/keyboard combo.

I bought it with my student discount and saved around $400.

Does HP have student discounts? Dell? Compaq? ;)

By FAR the best machine I have ever bought. I also own a 13.3" white Macbook as well.

dell also has an outlet store for refurished computers. If you have friends in a local district...see if their district has a representative or buying plan...sometimes its good for up to 10% off

personally i think the dells tend to be overrated...good computers but you can do just as well with lesser know brands...if not better.

Gateway Is a good computer. I have had a couple a friends who have them!
Some have had problems some have not. Compac laptop I like better then Dell because their shield power supply, could cause interfearence(sp) with other electronics. Compac(is owened by hp). Never been a fan of HP but know thoes who love them for the price. Gateway I belive got away from prietary software. Not sure onthat though. All I can tell You is that I have had Dell, Compac in a laptop used a AlienWare for a demo in Alias software. Alienware rocked the house! The knock on Alienware laptops have been the battery( how often an how long do we run on battery alone?) For everyday I would trade my new Dell for my Old compac(they are supplied to me). Gateway is good, Dell okay. My Alienware is 3+ ears old and would not trade it for a Top of the Line Dell or Gateway. I would consider it middle of the road after 3 + years. Side note is that at work going to a pc cluster aray instead of a severer aray.

My Picks Laptop
Compac (price)
Gateway (price)
HP (price
AlienWare (will be top notch today 3= years high middle of the pac)

Tower Based
HP
Gateway
Compac
(Price)

AlienWare (value over time)

Top Pic (Home Built by computer Geek) cost effective have to do your homework!

Wow, glad to see all the responses. MY current Rig is a PentD 3.2, 2GB DDR2, 500W PS, 7600GT, and a couple of burners and Optical drives.
I build all my own rigs.

Update: I just ordered a Core2Duo E6420 last night :awesome:

If anyone has problems, hit me up. I work on these things for a living ;)
