So I have another car in the garage that I have put a lot of time into building. You would never know this by the looks of the outside. I decided to give the polishing a run on the paint to see what it would turn out like.

The spoiler has be very dull looking for a long time, so I figured I would give it a shot first.

I did the right side a few days ago with some turtle wax rubbing compound and a wool pad.

http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n625/robertbaxley03/Buffing/IMG_0250.jpg

This is cleaned and clayed.

http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n625/robertbaxley03/Buffing/IMG_0273.jpg

This was with a wool cutting pad and Meguiars Ultimate compound.

http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n625/robertbaxley03/Buffing/IMG_0277.jpg

After doing this, I noticed that my pad was black. My first impression is that the clear is gone, but I have done nothing else to this paint so I do not know what to think.

Even considering the clear was gone, I decided to color sand the paint. It practice anyway right????

http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n625/robertbaxley03/Buffing/IMG_0281.jpg

At this point I tried a few different combinations. I used the wool pad with ultimate compound, the tagerine cutting pad with 105, the orange pad with 205, the red pad with cleaner wax yada yada,

After finding what worked best for me I used that process on the wing. You will see that the majority of the wing looks hazed over and parts of the wing are a dark deep black. Are the dark black spots the base coat where I have sanded through the clear??? It was like this before I started sanding, I was just trying to smooth the image a bit. OR is the hazy part where the clear is just oxidized???? It did not turn out like I had planned so I was just looking for some answers.

After this disappointment, I moved to another panel on the car that is painted the same black base clear. This paint is in much better condition and I was just curious as to how many of the scratches the 205 and orange h20 pad could remove.

I did a section of the roof and a side panel

This is the after and comparison shots.

If you have any insight on the wing paint it would be greatly appreciated.

Did the newly buffed section stain the pad black?

Im wondering the same as you,I think? Almost sounds like it could be single stage???? If not pay no mind to me, lol!

The color code for this vehicle calls for a base coat clear coat?? Of course it could have been repainted.

I used the pads on the rear spoiler first so there was residue on the pads when I got the near mirror finish on the roof and side panel. I washed the pads so they will be good to go in the morning. I will go out and do the other side panel and the other half of the roof and let you know if the pad receives any residue.

Are we thinking that the spoiler is painted with a single stage paint?? Is there any type of test I can do in a desecrate spot to check this out???

Thanks for the replies, they are greatly appreciated.

The way it looks, I'd say complete sand and repaint.

Thanks for the articles. If I follow those procedures, I will have a black pad so Single Stage it is. This means the car was painted at some point because the stock paint code is a BC/CC system.

As far as sanding and repainting, that is in the works. I was polishing things out briefly to see how bad the paint on this car really was. The hood and front fenders are horrible so this is another project that I plan to tackle in the future.

I just got done doing the roof and side panel so here are the pictures.

I used the sun to show the swirls in the paint.

Roof

Side Panel

http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n625/robertbaxley03/Buffing/IMG_0297.jpg

I then clayed the roof and side panel and it came out quite nice.

http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n625/robertbaxley03/Buffing/IMG_0299.jpg

Next up was Meguiars 205 and the orange H2O pad to remove all the swirls. I did just the side panel first.

http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n625/robertbaxley03/Buffing/IMG_0302.jpg

After doing that small section, here is what the pad looked like.

http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n625/robertbaxley03/Buffing/IMG_0303.jpg

I proceeded to do the roof with the same combo and this is the pad afterword.

http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n625/robertbaxley03/Buffing/IMG_0305.jpg

http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n625/robertbaxley03/Buffing/IMG_0306.jpg

Next I added some cleaner wax as the last step. For this I used a Mothers Gold Product and the Crimson H2O pad.

http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n625/robertbaxley03/Buffing/IMG_0309.jpg

Here is the pad

http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n625/robertbaxley03/Buffing/IMG_0310.jpg

The only difference with this section over the wing is that the surface turned out quite nice. This is only removing the swirls and not doing any sanding to the surface.

At this point I am pretty sure that it is single stage paint. I just can not figure out why it looks so hazy in certain parts on the spoiler. It seems that when I buffed it out, I buffed away all the deep black??? If you have any suggestions I honestly have nothing to loose. I have already pulled the paint code and plan to paint the spoiler pieces very soon so further damage to paint is welcome if it MAY fix the problem or provide information to the board.
