Duragloss Metal Polish (MP) #881 (http://www.autogeek.net/duragloss-metal-polish.html)

and

Duragloss Aluminum Polish (AP) #870 (http://www.autogeek.net/duragloss-aluminum-polish.html)

and while you are in the Duragloss section, buy all their other products too. everything else will go to the back of your detailing cabinet!

P21S Polishing Soap (http://www.autogeek.net/p153.html) is the best I've used

Love this stuff. My 2stroke exhaust pipe gets constantly assaulted with burnt on mud. I use either the p21s or mothers mag wheel and aluminum polish with a terry cloth. 0000 fine steel wool for the stubborn stuff.

I use Mothers Billet Polish on bare aluminum. On chrome I started using Optimum metal polish. I'm not sure how much I like it just yet since I've only used it twice. I always used Mothers billet for everything and never had an issue and the results were great.

Does the type of steel wool make a difference? I've never tried brass

I've got some severely neglected exhaust tips on my 2004 350Z. Is there any chance one of the specific metal polishes will bring them back to life? They're not rusted, they're just black. I don't know if it's stained or what. I tried OPC @ full strength today (holy crap that stuff was awesome on my wheels) and it didn't do a darn thing. I always tried some 105 by hand; same results-nothing.

I suggest you read the previous posts. Quad O steel wool and a metal polish will get out the worse crud.

I used the Never Dull wadding on the chrome tip from the factory, and it cleaned up nice.
