well today was the first day of work on my 78 firebird, and lets just say it was rather interesting spending 4 hours cleaning up the top side of the engine compartment (will save the lower half for when i can get it going to a coin wash so i can use a pressure sprayer).....
i used 4 cans of that gunk gel engine degreaser a gallon of purple power straight and a tooth brush it isnt 100 percent clean id say rather maybe 50-75 % clean until i pull the hood off.
and for referance this is what my engine compartment looked like when i started.

spot polish to check the condition of the paint under ( lots of sap that wont come off) and heavily oxodized.
