I see a lot of people using the white LC pad, but for paint in pretty good shape, would more of a finishing pad be acceptable?

yes, either is just fine, depends what you want it to do.

I've used 501 with many different types of pads but I find myself reaching for a white polishing pad more often than not. If the paint is in very good condition then you might get away with a finishing pad. Just do a test spot and you will have your answer.

The Hydrotech has a little more cut than the white and finishes down better as well.

White Pad
Hydrotech's work well too, but will not last long...YMMV

Either Lake Country white polish pad or tangerine hydro tech pad, I've had good success with both depending on paint. Nick posted a few shots of a Colorado (Canyon?) a while back and I believe he used the tangerine HT pads. Maybe he can confirm? I've also had good success with a crimson hydro tech pad:
