*sigh* i have this car until sunday but I don't have a backup BP...

No where near done with the vehicle either.. just 1/2 hood, front fender, part of door - this is where BP failed..

I'm screwed..

That looks like a 3M DA Backing Plate?

Or is it the Lake Country? They both have that yellow color.

:dunno:

it's LC.

It's an older version i believe.. it does not look like the one offered by AG currently.. see below:

Ha!

I addressed this issue in my how-to book. In fact in my how-to book I have pictures of early DA Backing plates and current DA Backing Plates and explain the problem and the fix.

I also consulted with Eric when writing this chapter as well as Jason Rose at Meguiar's.

Does anyone reading this thread have my how-to book and know the section I discussed backing plates?

It's on pages 52 to 53...

:)

Here's the pictures showing an early LC backing plate next to a current version, the text on pages 52 and 53 cover the history of DA Backing Plates, the problems and the cures.

No auto paint supply near you? They usually have these types of backing plates, and I even special ordered a 6" Megs rotary flex plate from the local Sherwin Williams auto supply store before I discovered the magic of AG.

I was in a similar situation with my Makita, I was a good two hours away from home, and the velcro backing on my 3M white wool pad decided to let go and I had no backup. I was working on a truck's tailgate and out of nowhere the pad slung off and flew into the driveway. Thankfully the owner had a hot glue gun and it *barely* made it through the rest of the job.

Do you think i could trust hot glue or other epoxy holding it together?

I dont know if hot glue would hold up to the vibration of the machine and an epoxy might melt that kind of material, but what have you got to lose?

Yeah, try the glue. After you do this for a while, even as a hobbyist, you want to have some backup pads, plates, even machines, because it stinks to not be able to finish something.

true. That's as far as i'm planning on taking this detailing thing.. hehe i can respect those that do this for a living.. hell i can respect the weekend warriors that have been doing this for a long time!

Eventually i'll build up the collection of tools...

As of right now, i just finished with an AIO by hand to clean the rest of the paint and get the surface grime off. I protected the paint with 2 coats of UPGP for now - when i get the new backing plate i'll see about finishing the polishing and applying Cquartz.. i didn't want to apply a coating knowing the paint underneath is not corrected fully...
