I use the werner work platform. It's sturdy and you can move side to side without having to repostion as you would with a ladder every pass or so. I can usually do two different sections as opposed to one on a traditional ladder.

Aluminum Work Platform TII (225 lb. Load Capacity)-AP-20 at The Home Depot (http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=100662616&storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=100662616&cm_mmc=shopping-_-googlebase-_-D22X-_-100662616)

And as for spotting defects a Brinkman Light is very handy top side.

I stand on the back tires.

LOL, sounds sketchy. I hope that is BEFORE any tire shine!

When I wash my truck's roof I usually just open the doors and stand on the door sill plate. It has some really sturdy oh-$#!7 bars to hold on to on the inside for balance. I would never do that on a CX's car though.
