Garage Wish List

I am designing a detailing garage. My wife is determined to build a house on top of it but that is beside the point.

My question is what would you have on your wish list for a garage? This is my one shot to get it like I want it. I appreciate all input.

Tons of lighting, a drain in the floor, or sloped a bit more than a normal garage for drainage, lift, AC/heater, water softener that goes to your outside hose as well, and lots of extra non car room for storage.

Im sure theres more, but thats just off the top of my head

Air and a system to deliver it throughout the garage.

A sink with plenty of hand cleaner.

+1 for the lift.

A place for beer (and water too I guess...gonna run out of beer eventually).

Floor dollies to move a car around on.

A sealed floor.

A urinal.

A Lazyboy.

If a full size lift isn't in the budget, I've seen some smaller scissor lifts that were placed in a depressed part of the garage floor with bar grating over the opening. Tiny example pic attached.

+1

This is also useful for basic vehicle maintenance as well as detailing.

I have a portable washing machine and dryer in my shop dedicated to washing m/f towels. The washing machine drains into my utility sink and sometimes it takes two or three washes to get the towels clean but with the residue draining into the sink I know when they're clean. The dryer is a 110V so it takes longer to dry. The wife is also happy that I'm not using "her" appliances in the house for my towels.

design for smart tool/product storage, as well as above : :xyxthumbs:: :)

Also, design for clearance to work around. Keep in mind the various sizes of vehicles that you may be working on.

If it is in the cards, try for a 10' or 12' ceiling. This will allow for clearance to work above the largest of vehicles without worrying about any hanging light fixtures, fans, garage door openers/tracks, etc..- roofs are painted, and as mike says "if it has paint, gets polished".

Trench drain along door inside with sloped garage floor to drain - coated floor with gritted surface - this will allow for indoor washing or water runoff from weather.

Dedicated air conditioning for your climate.

You'll need an air compressor (if not in hand already) - it is a wish list of mine to run permanent air lines around the perimeter of the garage with multiple drops to connnect tools

Another personal wish list item is an Indoor hose bib with filtration system is nice, as well as utility sink w/ hot and cold taps. maybe a dedicated washer/dryer per Paul Mitchell above

Gallon or 5 quart liquid storage with taps for large volume of products.

Battery powered leaf blower. Here's the one I use.

One+ 120 mph 120 CFM 18-Volt Cordless Electric Blower-P2102 at The Home Depot (http://www.homedepot.com/Outdoors-Outdoor-Power-Equipment-Leaf-Blowers/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xh7Zbbo6/R-202042150/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&storeId=10051)

Wall mounted vacuum w/20 ft. hose and attachments

Werner aluminum work platform. Can't say enough about how this helps reaching the roofs of vehicles and for setting my buckets on so I don't have to bend over so much.

You want as much lighting as you can get. Have it lit up like a paint booth and you will be fine. Right now I have 4, 4' flourscent fixtures with 4 bulbs each for a total of 16 4 foot bulbs and I still want more. The best thing would be to have light fixtures mounted horizantally on the walls throwing light down the sides of the car as well.

Thanks for all the suggestions. We met with the builder and designer yesterday and it looks like I'm going to get a wash bay with a drain, hot and cold water, washer and dryer hookups and a 49 x 28 dry area for interiors and polishing. I am not sure what floor I will have but I suspect it will be an Epoxy floor with some type of grit to keep it from being slick. I have a good air compressor and am looking at what is involved in running hoses to different parts of the garage. I am going to get as much light as the financial advisor (the one building the house on top of my garage) will allow.

I was not able to swing the lift or the walk-in beer cooler. Maybe they can be added later!
