Exactly.

Anytime a person wants to remove below surface defects they want to see the pad rotating and people that are new to machine polishing tend to not always hold the pad flat to the paint or make other mistakes that prevent the pad from rotating and then don't get the results they're looking for.

Anyone reading this thread, watching this video that's new to machine polishing with a DA Polisher should read my article here,

Long time lurker, first post. My late brother was a master detailer and got me my first job at a dealership detailing vehicles.

After a long break from detailing, I am now coming back to it and renewing my love for this ART.

I am attempting to learn to use a DA polisher and this thread has been a tremendous help.

Big thanks to you Mr. Phillips for being so informative and helpful for newbies and pros alike.

Looking forward to spending a lot of time on the AG forums!

Thanks for replying to this thread. It's probably the thread I recommend the most and by recommend I mean I copy and paste the title of this thread because all the titles of all my threads are blue clickable links to themselves.

Anyway, although I share this thread with a LOT of newbies to machine polishing... it never gets any replies.

I would like to respectively add that I mark my backing plates on two sides (180 degrees from each other).

I find this to be even easier to monitor.

I also add more than 1 mark. My OCD does not like the lack of symmetry when adding just one line.

That's how I started out doing, it. I would place 4 marks on the backing plate and the pad.

The above is from a "reply" I posted to MeguiarsOnline.com back in May of 2009.

Back then, the idea of marking your backing plate or marking your pads was a "new" idea.

BUT - also LOOK at how THICK the Meguiar's foam pad was back then? We didn't get THIN pads until Lake Country introduced their thin Hydro-Tech foam pads back in September of 2010.

Here's my article on that and you can see the time stamp of the first post in the thread.

Thin is in... (http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/ask-expert-featuring-mike-phillips/28825-thin-new-lake-country-hydro-tech-low-profile-5-1-2-x-7-8-inch-foam-pads.html)

Hard to believe that while the first foam pad was introduced in 1965 it took 54 years to get to thin pads.
