Great forum guys , I have learned more in the last 2 weeks of reading then I could of imagined. One question im left with is how many coats of last step wax is too many? If I keep layering will I gain anything in durability or shine?

Im using collinite 476s on one vehicle and megs nxt on the other.

Collinites website said its not needed but many choose to

I consider anything more than two as overkill - and I only do two to ensure complete and even coverage. The only scientific tests I've seen (using laboratory equipment to measure the thickness of the wax/sealant layers via ellipsometry - tests are here (http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=127943) and here (http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=130901)) showed that layering doesn't really work, at least for the products that he tested (several waxes and sealants, and I'm thinking that the make-up of LSPs should be fairly similar, on a general level, that it wouldn't be such a stretch to imagine the same result would apply for most products on the market).

Initially, I keep mine at two as well. Keep in mind that these layers are microscopically thin and begin to degrade as soon as they're applied.

After a wash I'll apply a quick coat of Optimum Spray Car Wax. This acts as a booster and leaves behind a great shine and added protection..:props:

A general rule of thumb goes like this,

Apply 2 coats when it comes to a wax or paint sealant, here's why,
Ensure a uniform coverage over 100% of the body panels
Ensure a uniform appearance over the entire car

One of the reasons for the above is because the average do-it-yourselfer or weekend warrior isn't a pro at this and can and will miss a few spots or won't evenly apply and work the product over the entire surface. Sometimes this comes from rushing, sometimes just un-perfected technique. So by applying the product twice, chances are pretty good that after the second application all portions of the paint have been adequately coated.

Also, lots of Joe Consumer types are working by hand and the human hand will never do as good a job as a machine like the PC style polishers.

Pros on the other hand are good at applying waxes and sealants either by hand or machine and can easily so a great job of evenly and thoroughly applying a coat of wax or paint sealant using only a single application.

Sometimes I apply one coat. Sometimes I apply two coats. Usually if I apply two coats it will be of the same product just to ensure uniform coverage. Sometimes I'll apply two coat using two different products and sometimes this is just for sport.
