Halogen work lights do an awesome job at highlighting swirls. You can get them fairly cheap from Walmart or Home Depot.

Here's the exact one I bought from Walmart. It's nothing special at all but works great when doing paint corrections. It also doubles as a heater in colder weather lol. Oh and the flashlight app for your smartphone from Android or Iphone store works surprisingly well for spotting defects up close too.

would i be fine with just the light from my iphone 4 then? It is pretty powerful lol, or to be certain I'll want to pickup a real light

Pick up some halogens. Just don't get the Task Force ones from Lowes. Bulbs are always burning out. I also have a LED light stick which helps as well.
