Curved edge pads

I just started using the rotary polisher (Makita) and am trying to round the learning curve. I'm using 8.5 inch curved-edge LC pads. What part of the pad is used on flat surfaces? Is it better to run the polisher flat and use only the center of the pad to contact the paint or should I tilt the polisher and have the curved-edge of the pad work the paint?

Also, I know "slow is better" when using a rotary, but it seems I'm just smearing the product around on 900-1000 rpm and it takes forever for it to break-down. What am I doing wrong?
