I know a lot of people have been waiting for these new backing plates to arrive for shipping...


Back in September, when we first received the prototypes I wrote this article and included a lot of pictures so everyone could see the new backing plates and how they attached, I'll copy the meat of the below thread here now for the same reason...

These are prototypes Eric Dunn sent me to test and evaluate, we'll be stocking these when the design is finalized and they go into production.

On the left is the 6" backing plate, center is the 4" backing plate and on the right is the interface plate that enables you to switch between either the 6" or the 4" backing plate.

Here's a view of the other side so you can see the ribs for strength, the plate itself is very rigid and this is part of the design that does away with the felt ring.

The protruding tabs lock into the slots on the interface plate and then both are bolted to the spindle.

The stock backing plate that comes with the Flex 3401 measures 5 7/16"

The new 6" backing plate actually measures a little larger than 6" inches to full support the back of a 6.5" pad. This dimension is subject to change in the final production versions.

On the left hand side is the factory backing plate on a 6.5" foam pad and the new 6" backing plate on the exact same pad.

The picture is a little deceiving as the outer edge of the backing plate actually extends "almost" to the outer edge of the back of the pad. Again, this dimension is subject to change in the final version. Currently the diameter = 6 7/16"

Used the new 4" backing plate today. It was awesome! Combining the power of a flex 3401 and a 4" pad allowed me to do correction in some tight spots. It's so easy to control even at full throttle.

Also used the optimum Mf cutting pad with the new backing plates, quite pleased with the result.

i can understand where the 4inch plate comes in handy but the 6?
I already thought the OEM backplate was HUGE.....

I'm not sure about popularity, but it was just released on AG at the end of february. Some people have been waiting for a long time for this to come out. I just got my 3401 in January and I could hardly wait for the new plates to come out.

I bought my Flex in late December and the backing plate kit which was expected to ship early January, right after the new year. Right after I palced my order, the expected shipping date slipped to end of February. Hmmmm, couldn't use the 4" pads I bought with my Flex... And then there were those who pre-ordered in November or earlier.
