When you are a new member you find out very quickly that postting in a thread automatically signs you up for instant email notifications every time someone responds to that thread.

While this can be worthwhile for threads where you have posed a question, it can become quickly overwhelming if you post in an active thread.

There are, however, options to control the default notification and subscription behavior, so it is easy to customize to suite your preferences.
To change the notification and subscription options you need to enter the User control panel (User CP) [1.] and edit options [2.] then set your preference [3.] as shown below:

Now that takes care of new threads you post in, however, you may want to go back and edit your notification options for threads that you have already been subscribed to.
This is easy to do as well, and is found again under the 'User CP' [1.] and List Subscriptions [2.]:

If you wish to change one or many notification options on your subscribed threads, check the boxes then apply an action to them from the drop down menu:

Power User Tips:
Now that you have found the User CP and Edit Options, this would be a really good time to edit your image resizing options (get rid of those annoying bars on large images) and customize other options such as how many posts to show per page, and sorting options.

Folders - Now that you are exposed to subscriptions and notifications you may have seen the folders option and wondered how this would be useful.
I use the folders to keep track of all the threads that I have started for quick reference in their own folder 'my threads', and I also have a 'reference' folder for threads I refer back to constantly such as the dilution ratios for 32oz bottles thread.
