The most common question asked when someone inquires about a tire dressing is whether it provides a natural, matte finish or a high-gloss shine. Up until now, you could either have one or the other from the same product. If you have more than one car and prefer a different look for each vehicle, or if you just like to switch it up every now and then, you would have two different products on the shelf. With Blackfire’s new Total Eclipse Tire Gel, you can have the concours look that you prefer for one vehicle, and the high-gloss shine that you prefer for the other.

Blackfire Total Eclipse Tire Gel doesn’t just enhance the appearance of your tires, it also conditions and protects them. Composed of a water-based formula free of any harsh solvents or silicones, Blackfire Total Eclipse Tire Gel is packed full of advanced UV inhibitors and ozone blockers. Another benefit of a water-based formula is dust attraction, or lack thereof. Blackfire Total Eclipse Tire Gel keeps tires looking new and protected while also being VOC compliant in all 50 states. Best of all, it dries to the touch and doesn’t sling!

Jeff, a co-worker and good friend of mine owns not one, but two Mustangs, one of which is a daily driver and the other a weekend toy. Jeff’s weekend toy is a bright red Mustang GT convertible that turns heads everywhere it goes. Starting from the big V8 engine that emits a deep rumble from the polished exhaust tips, to the brilliant, mirror-like finish of the 5-spoke 17” wheels, to the classic body lines that look back to the Mustangs of the 60s, Jeff’s bright red Mustang GT convertible flexes its muscles and shows off everywhere it goes. To continue to turn heads and wow bystanders, it was only appropriate to use a high-gloss tire dressing on the tires Jeff’s bright red Mustang GT convertible. Blackfire’s new Total Eclipse Tire Gel was the perfect candidate.

A tire dressing should always be applied to a clean tire that’s free of any previously applied dressings. You can use a dedicated wheel and tire cleaner or a quality all purpose cleaner to cleanse the tire of dirt, road grime and previously applied dressings. I’ve been using Blackfire’s new All-N-One All Purpose Cleaner (http://www.autogeek.net/blackfire-apc-all-purpose-cleaner.html) as my exclusive tire cleaner lately because it works very well and doesn't contain any harsh chemicals that could potentially be harmful to you or the tire.

Using a Flex-Foam Tire Applicator, I applied two thin, even coats of Blackfire Total Eclipse Tire Gel to the squeaky clean tires on Jeff’s bright red Mustang GT convertible.

Here is a 50/50 shot of the tire. The right side has been dressed with two thin coats of Blackfire Total Eclipse Tire Gel while the left side is bare.

Here is what the entire tire looks like after being treated with two thin coats of Blackfire Total Eclipse Tire Gel. Remember, Jeff prefers a high-gloss finish for his bright red Mustang GT convertible, and two thin coats of Blackfire Total Eclipse Tire Gel did the trick.

If you prefer the high-gloss finish like Jeff does for his bright red Mustang GT convertible, Blackfire Total Eclipse Tire Gel is an excellent option to greasy, silicone-based dressings. Even though it provides a high gloss finish, it still dries to the touch and will not sling.

Remember when I told you that Jeff owns not one, but two Mustangs? His other Mustang is a bit more conservative being that it’s a V6 model without all the bells and whistles of his bright red GT convertible. While Jeff’s radiant blue Mustang still stands out, he prefers a more conservative, natural matte finish for the tires. By altering the application of Blackfire Total Eclipse Tire Gel, it was no problem achieving the natural, matte finish that Jeff prefers for his radiant blue Mustang.

To achieve a natural, matte finish, simply apply one thin, even coat to a clean tire.

Whether you prefer a natural, matte finish or a high-gloss shine, Blackfire Total Eclipse Tire Gel can give you the look you prefer with a thick, easy-to-apply gel formula that dries to the touch. Blackfire Total Eclipse Tire Gel will easily replace the need for two separate tire dressings as it did for Jeff.

Is this really unique to this product? It seems to me that many tire shines can be modulated by the number of applications, in fact the AG description of Four Star Ultimate Tire Protection Gel states: "One coat will create a deep satin finish. For more shine, apply a second coat after an hour."

Composed of a water-based formula free of any harsh solvents or silicones, Blackfire Total Eclipse Tire Gel is packed full of advanced UV inhibitors and ozone blockers.

So this product actually contains no silicones? Which would make it a fundamentally different chemistry than say something like Opti-Bond or the aforementioned Four Star (which states that it has no petroleum, no mention of no silicones).

Technically ALL tire dressings can be layered, or wiped off, or gooped on to achieve the desired look, but that generally affects durability and the likelihood that the product will sling, or feel greasy. Blackfire Total Eclipse Tire Gel dries to the touch, applied thick or thin, and will not sling. Instead of waiting an hour or two before applying a second coat, you can do so within a minute or two of the first coat. You can easily achieve the desired look with Blackfire Total Eclipse Tire Gel without compromising ease of application or durability.

Total Eclipse Tire Gel features a water-based formula, like many other tire dressings on the market. It's not the first tire dressing, or the last, to utilize a formula free of any solvents or harmful silicones. Total Eclipse Tire Gel is noticeably thicker than the other two products you mentioned, which aids in the application process to achieve the desired look, high-gloss or matte finish.

Like many other products we carry, samples will be available for most products in the Blackfire line, including the new Total Eclipse Tire Gel, so you can try it out. :dblthumb2:

I can attest to the no sling statement. I applied two coats on my tires around 9:30 pm, left my house at 5:30 am and drove nearly 900 miles. Checked my paint at each of the 3 fuel stops and to my surprise not the first sign of dressing sling and the shine was only reduced after a slight shower near the end of the trip. Depending on the weather for my return trip I plan to document the durability, etc.

This may be my new go to tire gel, in gallon form of course. :)

Total Eclipse Tire Gel features a water-based formula...

Fair enough, Nick.

Nick,

Thanks for this great post! Tell me, why would one choose this product over Blackfire Long Lasting Tire Gel (which I bought from AGO not long ago - no pun intended)?

Thanks,

Jon

Jon,

Total Eclipse Tire Gel is much thicker than Long Lasting Tire Gel and it dries to the touch without having to wipe the area with a microfiber towel.

Blackfire Total Eclipse Tire Gel is thicker than DP Gloss Tire Gel and Wolfgang Black Diamond Tire Gel. The latter is the thinnest of the trio and provides the highest gloss. DP provides a similar look to Total Eclipse Tire Gel, but it doesn't apply as thin. All three are great products, you just have to try each one to determine which one you like best.

Will you guys start offering a trial size of this stuff? I would love to see how it compares to what I have now. I really like wolfgang, I have yet to try perl but again would love to see how they stack against each other for my own personal preference of go-to product.

Ditto. Not sure I'd buy full bottles of Blackfire Total Eclipse Tire Gel, DP Gloss Tire Gel and Wolfgang Black Diamond Tire Gel...in addition to my BF Long Lasting Tire gel, just to see which I like best.

This is obviously a newbie question, but if tire dressing is applied to protect and condition the tires, what about the inner sides of the tires? They remain unprotected.

Not exposed to UV light like the front face.
