I have a 6.5 " backing plate for my PC and I'm thinking of getting this (http://www.autogeek.net/lake-country-beveled-pad-kit.html)deal.

I've noticed in the past that when I use these smaller pads with the larger plate, the foam tends to get chewed up some.

My question is this... Am I doing something wrong and causing the pads to get chewed up or are the smaller pads not designed to be used with the larger plate?

Using a pad smaller than the plate is a good way to destroy some part of your vehicle if you bump it, use pressure and don't have it flat, hit a mirror, polish near a curve, etc. I would advise against it.

That answers my question then ;)

I guess I've been lucky. Been using the smaller pads for over a year now and haven't damaged anything ( knock on metal )

While you shouldn't use foam pads smaller than the backup plate for the reasons Corey mentioned, I can't see any reason how a backing plate slightly larger than the pad would cause the pad itself to become chewed up.

The correct backing plate for the 5 1/2" foam pads is a 5".

just get the propper sized backing plate, will make your life so much easier. 20$ backing plate or 300-1200$ paint job is your decision.

For less than $20 you can save a "woops" that can cost hundreds or more to fix. I wouldn't use a pad smaller than the plate, just not smart at all. Kind of like driving highway speed with one of those mini temp spare tires on the front of your car....will it work, yes. But it's a disaster waiting to happen.
