Husband Christmas Gift

I am wanting to get my husband polisher/waxer for Christmas. I have seen that most people say to get the Porter cable 7424xp. Could anyone help me with what products to order with it for him? Thanks for all you help in advance! I know nothing about them :)

If it isn't too late, pick the Griots Garage 6 inch dual action polisher instead of the Porter Cable 7242XP.

I would also get him the Meguiars Microfiber Pad system. 2-4 pads of cutting and 2-4 pads for finishing. Then you can get the coordinating compounds and finishing wax.

If you call the staff at Autogeek, they will be really helpful with putting a package together for your husband.

I would call AutoGeek and ask for Nick or Megan. The can actually build you a package that will fit you husbands individual need. Feed them his info of intended use and needs and they will take care of you.

There are several packages that have combinations of the porter cable 7424xp including pads and either polish/wax/protection products or swirl removers. Do you know what your husband wants to achieve?

There are a number of DA Polishers on the market, the original design is from Porter Cable and everyone else's is a knock-off of their design.

All the DA Polishers we care will work great, some people like the Griot's Garage because it does offer the most power to keep the pad rotating when applying pressure to the tool to remove swirls.

I show all of them in the garage when we have our Thursday night projects because they will all get the job done...

So all the major players in the DA Polisher world will work but it is true that the Griot's Garage does have the most power to maintain pad rotation under pressure and it's when the pad is rotating that swirls and scratches are removed.

Get 5.5" flat pads, I sent my Dad the Lake Country Flat version because they are the simplest form of buffing pad and will work on just about anything. Later he can experiment with all kinds of fun stuff like,

Your husband will love you more if you spring for the Griots 6" DA. Its only a few dollars more, has a lot more power then the Porter Cable and also has a Lifetime (no questions asked) Warranty whereas Porter Cable only has the one year warranty

Not to mention all the Porter Cables that've been flying apart during polishing (which can be extemally dangerous)

The choice is obviously yours...

Removing the swirls out of a black truck is completely doable... in my how-to book I do recommend breaking large vehicles up into sections and then just tackling a section a day, or a section a weekend so that way you keep the project fun.


Here's the deal with the different options for the polishers...

As long as you get thin, 5.5" foam pads, all three of the different polishers will get the job done, that includes,

Porter Cable 7424XP (http://www.autogeek.net/dual-action-polishers.html)

Griot's Garage 6" Random Orbital Polisher (http://www.autogeek.net/griots-random-orbital-polisher.html)

Meguiar's G110v2 (http://www.autogeek.net/meguiars-dual-action-polisher-g110.html)


If you go with the Griot's Garage Polisher it comes with a 6" backing plate but you'll need a 5" backing plate to use with 5.5" pads. Here's the link to a 5" backing plate,

The GG does have more power but the Porter Cable has the longest history of being a reliable tool.

I've been using them since they were introduced from the wood sanding industry to the paint polishing industry and I've NEVER had one fly apart while I'm using it. And this is one of the reasons I sent my Dad a PC...

Any example of ANY tool in the world flying apart is more of the exception, not the rule.
