I was doing a polish at the local chrysler dealer a couple weeks ago when this charger rolled in. Apparently a young guy won it, but didn't want it so he sold it to the dealership. This thing is brand new with less than 100 kilometers on it. Anyway obviously what struck me is the flat black paint. I noticed light scratches on the fenders and bumpers and wondered how the hell would you polish this thing? I have never had experience with this sort of thing.

The guys at the dealership don't like this car, as a matter of fact its completely burried in the snow right now! So I don't imagine they will be asking me to polish it, its more of a curiousity of mine. Has anyone tried to polish a flat black car before?

Afaik you can't polish it. There are a few matte products on the market to clean and protect it, but that's about it. Is it painted flat or wrapped?

is it a v6 or v8

It's a V8 because it's an RT unless they just put that badge on there. Swissvax makes some nice products to maintain matte finishes, but my guess is that the car is wrapped therefore it can't be polished. I would guess that it is wrapped because during movies they are rough on cars and if they wrap them, they can just rip the wrap off and redo it multiple times.

Wish I would have won that Charger. Remove the Fast Five logo and get some Billet Wheels and that car would be sweet.

They used to sell some clear paint in a rattle can at NAPA called "dull coat." Again, it was a clear paint that gave a flat finish, which has me wondering if this car isn't painted with something similar. Interesting though.

Its definitely painted matte black, not wrapped. I goofed though its not a 2012 its a 2011! Its got a bone stock 5.7 hemi in it. Apparently there are only 5 of these fast five edition chargers out there.

Heres the stock yet dirty hemi!

How the heck did that thing get that filthy with less than a 100 miles on it? That's crazy!

In my above post I'd like to clarify something I said. I wonder if the flat finish isn't a similar technology used to paint that car, as the "dull coat" paint I referenced.

We used "dull coat" (again, a clear finish) to dull the finish of any glossy paint. You wouldn't know it was a flat finish paint at all if someone didn't tell you.

I have a hard time believing this car isn't painted with a similar technology. A base coat (shiny or flat wouldn't matter), then protected with a flat, clear, top coat.

I would tend to think that the flat paint of yesterday is different than that of today. That's just a guess.

Yeah BobbyB that ones sick. Although i reserve flat black for old hot rods. When i worked at Mercedes all the bodyshop parts came in primed in flat black. Now when i see a new car in flat black it just looks like a bodyshop project that never got painted. However, give me an old rat rod in flat black anyday!!!
