I personally think that 8.5" are simply to big. You will need to use spot buff 4" pads very often.

Bill ..years ago I used 7.5 and 8 inch pads for the buffer...I found I was getting buffer hop...holograms from not holding pads flat and using the edge ...could not get into tight areas..so I took a 7 inch backing plate and cut it down to 5.5 inch and used 6 inch pads..was night and day with results...more control..no holograms...could get in more areas...and seemed to use less product..and less product sling as the bigger pads used alot of product the keep wet for less hop..

The 8.5's will get more RPM and cover more surface area but there is more risk of damage. It's up to you. Since I'm still learning the rotary, I'm using the 6's for now. I just have to turn up my machine more to get the equilivelent RPMs.
