Pointing out a defect thats in question or just to point it out so that the viewer sees the correction in the after picture

sometimes it also helps the camera focus on a certain point instead of just the paint

Mainly just to help focus.

Any object could be used. Coin, part of clay bar. Lens cap.

Yeah, that's Mike Phillip's trick for getting the auto-focus to work on a reflective surface, otherwise it tends to focus on the wrong point and come out blurry.

I do it to focus on a glossy surface in a macro shot. Otherwise the camera attempts to focus on the reflection which is much farther away in the cameras mind.

Like others stated, it gives your camera something to focus on and by doing so be focused on the surface of the paint. You can use your finger, a quarter, nickel, dime etc., a piece of tape or a piece of detailing clay, whatever it takes to get the shot.

I use my finger because I always have it with me when I'm taking pictures and it's fast... and that's why.

Here's my article on the topic, see the one with the red arrow pointing to it...
