1972 Corvette Stingray - Extreme Makeover - Process and Products Used

First, here's the products we used to restore a show car shine to this classic 1972 Corvette

First we wiped the car down to get it clean using DP Waterless Auto Wash

Then we clayed the paint, chrome and glass using Pinnacle Ultra Poly-Clay and Pinnacle Clay Lubricant

Then we tested Prima Cut and Prima Swirl with 6.5" Purple Foamed Wool Pads on Flex 3401 Forced Rotation Dual Action Polishers and also using small prototype buffing pads on a Flex PE14 using an extension adapter.

After removing all the majority of the deeper defects we machine polished the paint using 6.5" Crimson Hydro-Tech Finishing Pads and Prima Finish

Next we machine applied Prima Banana Gloss using Flex 3401 DA Polishers with Griot's Garage Waxing Pads

We topped the Prima Banana with Dodo Juice Banana Armor using LC Gold 5.5" Jeweling pads on both a Meguiar's G110v2 and a Porter Cable 7424XP

The Prima Swirl we used last night worked really well. I thought the foamed wool pad with the prima swirl were a perfect combination. The product applied great, and left great results quickly.

The Prima Finish really brought out the "Wet" look and the Crimson foam pad helped to apply the product well

I thought the Prima Banna Gloss was a little too thin, but still applied nicely to the corvette.

I was so impressed by the Flex 3401 that I just got home from picking one up from autogeek! That machine is the best. I didn't know a DA could work that well at paint correction. The whole process was very simple and effective for the results we were all looking for.

I can't wait for the next project car!!! It was an awesome time!

Exceptional job gang. She looks awesome and the car ain't bad either. How does the purple wool work with the 3401? I haven't ventured there yet.

Exceptional job gang. She looks awesome and the car ain't bad either. How does the purple wool work with the 3401? I haven't ventured there yet.Ed I was very surprised how well the purple wool worked with the Flex I own both a rotary and the Flex . When it's time for wool I'm used to pulling out the rotary and go at it that's how I was taught .

Most of the time I really have no reason to use wool but when I have the need to use wool again I will try it on my Flex 3401 and report back.

Thanks for the tip Adam. I sometimes need something more aggressive than foam but not quite rotary. I will certainly give the wool a shot when my next problem child detail arrives in the shop.

I would like too comment on a couple of highlights from last night's makeover .

Usually when we do these makeovers we use some common products that most detailers use all the time .105/205 Hydro Tech pads CCS pads etc.
So last night Mike decided to change it up some and use some products that I haven't used on any of the last makeovers .It was a great idea first up was the Purple wool pad on the Flex 3401 and trust me when I say the car needed it .We used Prima's Swirl if I had to compare it with another product I would have to say Wolfgang TWR . I was pleasantly surprised how well the Purple Foam Wool and the Flex 3401 and the Prima worked together cleaned up the paint with some light Micro Marring which is normal with such an aggressive pad and as always the Flex 3401 had no problem handling the task at hand .

Next up we moved onto the Prima finish to remove the Micro Marring left behind from the wool . Both Prima products the swirl and the finish have a long working time and very little dust was left from both products I was real happy about that because we really don't have the time to wash the car down after every step .
The Prima Finish cleaned the paint right up and most of us all ready know how well the Hydro Tech pads work . The Hydro Tech Crimson didn't let me down we were ready for LSP .

As mentioned by Kyle the Prima Banana Gloss was very thin I didn't expect a wax too be that thin but it really wasn't a problem just surprised . I actually applied to much product too the pad but on the plus side I didn't have to add anymore product I think I covered the front fenders,Hood and part of one of the side doors until I needed to add some more Banana Gloss too the pad . While we take a few minutes to have a soda and clean up the shop we let the Banana gloss setup. Using one of the first things Mike taught me a few years ago the swipe method to check if the wax was ready to come off after about 15 minutes we were ready . The Banana Gloss had to be one of the easiest products to remove I've used . It almost felt like we didn't apply any . No dust at all and no white residue left over either .

Next up DoDo Juice Banana Armour, LC Gold CCS Jeweling pads if you never used any of DoDo products pick up a sample I'm sure you will be happy with the results . Like any of DoDo products they just work plain and simple easy on easy off .

Another one of my new favorite products is Car Pro Eraser I my buddy Corey actually turned my onto this product after we used it on my 2011 Harley we did a write on another product that speaks for itself it works bottom line .
Hopefully this write up gives you a little insight what goes on when we do these make overs I'm no CeeDog when it comes to a write up or a review I'm the guy who just likes to work on a car and keep going until it's done . Maybe one day I will learn to do a professional write up but don't count on that I leave that to other people . The results tell my story .
Thanks again to Mike and Auto Geek for making Thursday nights another night my wife doesn't have to deal with me .
