Mine was Megs Quik Detailer when I was about 16 or 17.

Honestly I do not use spray detailers much anymore. If I feel the need to use one I will dilute some ONR or DP Rinseless wash down to quick detailer strength.

I've always found that the Megs and Mothers quick detailers tend to leave a residue behind (IME of course). Which always left me less than satisfied, especially on a black or dark colored car.

For light dust I will use my California duster, but anything more than a light dust I bust out the two buckets and do an ONR wash.

Motor Oil!!

I don't know that oil was the first spray detailer, but I know in the Mid-50s my grandfather said all the car lots would spray the paint down with oil to give them a wet look. Said they rubbed it in and it was more used on cars that were a fwe years old and had some oxidation on the SS paints.

My grandfather knew all the old tricks, like half strait 40 weight engine oil, and half 90w gear oil to make a noisy engine quieter. He told me story's about people packing the valve covers completely full of grease to hid tapping and noise in an engine.

My grandfather must have known some shady people.. lol

Ultima Detail Spray... Im the MAN You could have guessed right? LOL

Ironically it was the only product of theirs that didn't blow me away... although I did like it until I got two straight bottle that were different than the previous batch. Thank goodness they came along with Waterless wash plus!

It was probably around 1985 or so that I started using:

Meguiar's Trigger Wash...It was very soon after that the name was changed to:
Meguiar's Quick Detailer.

First spray detailer that I had ever seen.
Still good stuff, IMO.

{Much better than the kerosene we would sometimes use to shine-up our rat rods to impress the chicks.} :)

I know what you mean by residue, I have found that Megs #34 leaves nothing behind.

From what Ive heard the first QD was a product called Magic Mist made by a company called Car Groom. Car Groom was called the cosmetic for cars. The company sold to car dealers and auto paint jobbers. it was not generally sold OTC. The next qd was Meguiars Trigger Wash.
