I have used Mothers Pre-wax Cleaner, PB pro polish, and WG Deep Paint cleanser. WG seemed to better by machine but any work fine by hand. WG is the most wet (maybe oily) so very workable.

I would agree with the clay bar & proper lube, followed by Meguire's Deep Crystal Cleaner.
