Not sure how they happened, but the window regulator for BMW's is very problematic and just happens to be running with a nasty grinding sound when operating. Very slow movement on the window as well. Not sure if one thing has to do with the other, but the scratches are random and very deep. The largest are just about an inch in length. Previous owner didn't provide any explanations.

Also happens to be a similar mark in the lower right hand corner of the oposite window. Would like to know the cause, but more importantly is there anything I can do about them on this level other than window replacement?

Since these are side windows you can polish out deep scratches without affecting the optical qualities of the glass in a way that will affect your vision while driving.

You will most likely have to use a drill motor with a hard felt bob in it. And an aggressive polish made just for grinding out defects in glass.

I make my own glass polish from cerium oxide and water. But there are many dedicated polishes available. Griots makes one as well as Diamondite.

Here is an instructional post from Mike all about how to do it.

I have a bunch of vertical scratches on my front passenger side window was just going to replace the whole window if not too expensive. Not sure what caused them I don't hear anything funny when I put the window down but I'm guessing something must be off in the mechanism.

I'd pull the door panel off and take a look in there. Doesn't make much sense to fix the scratches and then have them reappear again. Try to find the cause, fix it, and then repair the scratched glass. Just my 2 cents.

It looks like someone tried to break the glass.

I've had this happen to a personal vehicle, a 2007 Dodge Ram, they tried to smash in the front passenger side window- and left these marks. After about 3-4 attempts, they moved to the back side glass, and smashed that one instead.

Funny enough, I bought a used 1993 Jeep cherokee. Same marks on the front passenger window, and a replaced rear side window....deductive reasoning, they couldn't break the front, so they moved onto the rear again.
