What causes it?
How come some cars have it and others don't?

:( My car is getting some SERIOUS cc failure.

Industrial fallout, the effects of the sun, tree sap and bird bombs are what cause the most harm to the clearcoat. We polish our cars to remove the harmful oxidation and then we wax or seal it to create a barrier to offer a buffer zone for the paint from the constant onslaught it suffers from the sun, pollution and trees and birds.

One cause I always watch for (using a paint guage which is standard for dealers buying at auction) is previous wet sanding and thinning of the clear coat. If the guage reads below the OEM level by a significant amount, it's an indication that the hood/trunk/roof have been wet sanded and compounded.

Sometimes you can take another 1-2 passes with wet sanding, but after that, you're too thin on the clear coat and will probably see failure.

This is an interesting topic, I'm very curious on this clearcoat failure so I'm posting to keep up with all the info that may be posted here.

My car is 3 years old and I believe I'm having similar issues on my hood. Do you have any particular pictures?

Very interesting. Something to think about when purchasing a used car.

I want a paint guage... but I don't know where to start. And I think they are like what 300 +?? A little steep for me right now.

I will get some pics by the end of the day.

EDIT:
Hood. They look like rock chips, but I have been told it is CC failure.

Trunk - Just noticed this yesterday :(

Roof - Has never been polished before, that's why it looks like crap. ;)

Yup, that looks like failure. I actually have one small spot on my roof thats about a nickel in size, from some rock as it has a slight indentation, pry when I was driving to the lake house one time as there was always construction or truckers on those roads. Has a spider web type look to it, I just keep an lsp over it, and its been there for pry 3-4 years and still looks the same, so I guess that good lol. I'm not gonna bother redoing it and putting clear on it etc, you can barely notice it unless you get on the roof.

With small areas of CC failure (dime sized), should you avoid polishing over it with your PC? Or would polishing help make it not as visible?

This is very interesting because this picture is how my Volvo's hood is looking like.....would it be okay if I post a picture of my Volvo and it's hood here too? The reason I ask is becuase I don't want to hijack yet another topic. Figured it's best to ask first before doing it. The purpose of me posting my picture is to get opinion from some of you experts.

Second question, where can you get these paint gages?

Nica - go ahead and post whatever you want. I really wanted this thread to be about CC failure in general, not really MY cc failure.

Thank you for letting me post my pictures here. I don’t really know if it's CC failure but please advise. I assumed they were just rock chips.
