This car belongs to a friend and he will be bringing it by for some work/advice. What approach should one take to correct minor scratches on the flames and black paint? I'd like to hear some do's and dont's. I've tackled numerous black cars, but never one with custom painted flames.

Call whomever did the flame graphics and find out how much clear he shot over the flames and how much he left after wetsanding and buffing.

That ride is insane. After watching the second clip you're promted to watch some others on that same car...it has awesome power to say the least. Best sounding car I've heard in a long time too.

Exactly what I would have recommended, (locate and talk to the painter), and the questions I would have asked...

:dblthumb2:

Not a lot of clear according to the owner

First, according to what I've read in this thread, the flames are under the final clear layers of paint.

Count yourself lucky. The owner was wise to coordinate with the painter before the paint job to have the flames painted on before the clear layers of paint were sprayed.

All you need to do is approach this like you would any important car you're working on and that's by testing the least aggressive product to get the job done.

Hopefully any swirls or scratches are not deep.
Hopefully the paint is not too hard.

Test out a light polish and polishing pad first and then inspect the results using a 10% solution of IPA to Water.

If the swirls are removed to our satisfaction, then duplicate this process over the rest of the car and periodically check your results.

If the light polish and polishing pad isn't working effectively enough or fast enough, then move up to a medium polish with a polishing pad and test again.

Use expert technique and be sure to work clean.

Looks like a wild car and a fun project.

Not alot of clear according to the owner

But that's according to the owner, not the guy who did the flames. And what's "not a lot of clear"? One coat, two coats, three? And how thick was each coat? You get my point? Without talking to who did the paint you won't know and are left with a guess. It's not gonna kill you to pick up the phone and punch a few buttons - honest, millions of people do it every day, you will survive the experience.
