Today I was working on my dads dark blue 06 325i, washed, clayed, and began swirl correction starting with swirl x on a white, then tangerine pad using a flex 3401. I eventually worked my way up to M105 and an orange pad, and even that wasn't removing the all of the swirls. I'm pretty sure I dry buffed the paint, and created holograms. :bash:
Can I get some tips on how to correct the dry buff and clear the swirls? Would I use an aggressive pad with a less aggressive compound like 205?

I thought the paint would be soft, but it seems like it either has a really hard clear coat or the fk1000p on the paint about a month ago is still protecting it. Wouldn't 105 remove that while making passes?

I didn't know that DA's could cause holograms?

Holy God you really did a number on that. I would guess that M205 would clean the mess up. You're not doing this out in the sun are you?

Those are not holograms, it serious marring.

That's what I was thinking. If he was dry buffing with the pads.

:cry:I know! still learning, no I did this inside the garage. If I didnt strip the wax using a dawn wash or ipa, could it be breaking down the compound a lot faster? M205 on an orange pad?

If you clayed the car properly, the clay would have removed the majority of the wax.

You could try an orange or white pad with the 205, just don't run it dry again ;)

The wax is no match for the polish, its gone as soon as you start the DA.

I was able to fix the back using a white pad and 205, the front still has some small trail marks after using a white pad with 205, and black pad with swirl x. I think I'll use a dawn wash on the front to make sure all the wax is removed and try a white pad with 205 again.

If a white pad with 205 is still causing marring or not removing the remaining swirls on the paint. What can remove the swirls without marring the paint?

I'm telling you if you went over the paint with a polish the wax is long gone ;)

A white pad and 205 should never cause marring.

When polishing, you want to stop the machine when the polish goes clear. That means that you can still see that there is polish residue on the paint, but you can easily see your reflection in it. Once you go past this point, you are going to be dry buffing are marring your paint. How much polish are you using and what speed are you using?

I was using an orange pad at speed 5 with about 4-5 dime sized drops on the pad after priming the pad using the Kevin Brown method. I'll take some more pictures of the hood after going over it with 205 on speed 3 and a white pad. So far after going over it with the white pad I can still see some trails, but it's better than before.

I got to thinking about this thread and while it sucks things didn't turn out the way you wanted it still shows that things can and will go wrong while using a DA.

I'm sure when its all over you will have that thing looking great.
