I recently bought a T2i and was wondering how much different do filter make? I was looking to get one for outdoor detail shots.

as long as youre taking pictures as the suns going down youd be ok without a filter. did your camera come with a hood?

Nope, I was also looking into getting a aftermarket hood.
Are you familiar with 50mm lens? I was thinking about getting Canon 50mm 1.8 or the 1.4, but the price difference is huge....

definitely buy a hood, they are cheap and worth it. filters arent necessary and its not worth buying a cheapo one because it can actually degrade the quality of the photo. downside is a good one can be a couple hundred bucks. if you want good pictures without a filter, take pictures on overcast days or when the suns going down (which gives amazing photos) ill post a couple i took without a filter here in a sec
