I do know it is chrome since its leaving black residue on my towel. I tried mothers mag and aluminum polish with 0000 steel wool and it didnt do much. It looks really dull and i was wondering what would be the best product to use to bring this back to life? The chrome bumpers are also the same. Anything you guys recommend to tackle this?

perhaps a chrome specific polish ?? As I remember for blueing of chrome, Blu-job use to repair it and made it bling-bling.

Just be careful. Chrome is usually a three step process; the chromium, nickel, and copper layers in my brief experience are extremely thin.:dblthumb2:

Just because your pad turned black doesn't make it chrome. It can be aluminum

Looks like stainless steel to me. Did you try putting a Magnet on it? If not magnetic must be stainless. I used Ultimate polishing compound and mine door post are like a mirror. Yes it will turn pad black. I think "Poweraid" has it right.

That's not chrome man. Chrome wouldn't leave black residue unless it was just plain dirty. Looks like either stainless, or polished aluminum. My guess is stainless. Either way, they are both just as much of a pain in the ass to polish.

It's like aluminum...you gotta polish over and over again.

I have had very, very good luck polishing different metal (chrome, stainless, etc) with a small white wool pad and M105 on my rotary. Collinite Metal Wax is also another great product you can use after this step. You can put it on with a rotary and a small foam pad. It will shine like crazy!!
