So it looks like the clearcoat on my fender is peeling off(I think its the cc, correct me if I'm wrong). It started with a rockchip that hit that spot and its slowly been getting worse. What can I do? Is there any other option other than getting it repainted? Its a little flaky, like I could pick it off with my finger nail if I wanted.

That's the clear coat failing. Only fix is to respray the clear. You could attempt to spot fix it if you really wanted to.

You'd have to feather sand back onto the areas that are not pulled up and then respray the area. Not as easy as it sounds.

Tim,

Was that section repainted?

I've seen clear coats fail but that looks like someone didn't prepare the color coat properly though.

I was expecting but hoping to not hear that. :awman:Think there is anyway to stop it from peeling further so I dont go insane while trying to save up some money?

That fender is messed up. Along with that, I have these as well. These ones are pretty stable, no peeling at all.

I dont know to be honest if it was. It was fine when I bought the car. I then had a rock hit that spot and its slowly been getting worse. Everytime I wash the car water gets under the clear which Im assuming is making it worse.

They did a damn fine job if it was painted, color match is perfect..

The only thing I would try is carefully dabbing on some polyurethane and let it leach under the delaminated section and create a tighter seal. This certainly can't hurt...

An artists brush should work well here....

I agree, it looks like there may have been a blend somewhere on that panel and they neglected to scuff the rest of the panel before clearing the whole thing. That would be my hunch, anyway.

Tim: You might look on the edges of that panel with the hood raised and see if there are any signs of a tape line -- that's the surefire way to tell if you're dealing with factory paint or not.

Same thing happened to both side mirrors. So I took some of urethane mixture I make for headlight sealing and put some on figuring it couldn't make them look worse. Actually cleaned them up nice. No more dull mirrors. They are still peeling like a snake every time I wash the car so I just keep reapplying the urethane.

Notice in the pic the top & bottom parts look ok & you can how far it's peeled near the middle. (Ignore the dirt & bugs :))

Although I don't think the urethane would work considering where it is. In my case I'll wind up doing the entire mirror so it really won't matter.

So would the urethane be permanent? Or would I have to redo it after each wash?

Ill take a look at the the fender in a few minutes and take a picture. I pray its not a repray. I already found out my front and rear bumpers were reprayed at one point. Carfax had no record and the dealer never mentioned it. This will agravate me even more if it was.

I dont think its a repray. I see no signs of a tape line at all. The only part that looks off is near the top, looks like the paint was applied unevenly. I circled the area.

So far I haven't had to redo any of it. But they are still peeling, so every time enough peels off I just redo the whole mirror.

Mine started similar to the spots you have & kept on getting bigger. So I decided to try the urethane. Worked ok on the spots that had no clearcoating left. But, and I hate to say it, it didn't stop the flaking of clearcoat. Which is not a big deal b/c it's only the mirror cover, but it looks like you have spots on the wheel lip & pillars. If it keeps flaking like mine eventually it'll be the whole panel.
