View Full Version : How's this interior?

I was gonna do two interiors this week, but one of the guys was way too busy. So one of my bosses wanted me to detail his cars’ interior. It was definitely a Pontiac, I think Grand Prix. What do ya’ll think? Need a serious critique! I plan on doing this stuff as well as exteriors this summer for extra cash, and to keep me busy doing something I enjoy.

The interior was horrible, but it’s a party/everyday driver, so I should have expected that much. Drink stains had eaten up some of the painted plastic trim, and this was especially noticeable on the center console. If he wants it to look brand new, it has to be repainted.

He also had no floor mats, so the carpets were pretty bad. Another note you will notice in the after pictures is that his interior light stay on. His switch is broken, some parts you can see where the light hits the foot space on the floors.

Here are the chemicals I used:
303 Fabric/Vinyl Cleaner (diluted to a 1:10)
Simple Green (dilute to about 1:5)
Water
303 Aerospace Protectant
Dawn (I know people will hate me for this, used it on the door jambs!)
Maguiar’s Ultimate Quick Wax
DP Dual Action Odor Eliminator- Tropical Breeze Scent

Other Notes: Picked up and vacuumed before the before picks. Used a 1.5 hp shop vac to vacuum and suck up the water. 50 in. of SP really blows when trying to get the wet out of scrubbed rugs. I don’t drench the rugs, but the small bit of chemical and water I use usually has to be soaked up with a towel, then the lint has to be vacuumed up. Probably gonna get a Vacmaster (found a small one with 88 in. of SP.)

Not bad :xyxthumbs: Good Job!

I see a little product splatter in the after pic of the gauge cluster (top left)

Are you using any brushes for the small intricate cracks of the center console or radio, A/C controls?

From what I can see it looks much better. On the gear shifter, did you pull it down into low gear to clean the boot?

Also, in the last pic. On the bottom of the door jam, you missed that rubber strip

Sell them a carpet kit and it would look good as new

Oh, and throw that Simple Green in the garbage before you ruin something

Just noticed that splatter!! I'm gonna have to start taking a flashlight ant inspecting a lot better.

I used a very soft 1" paintbrush for the cracks/crevices and vents. Worked pretty well so far; a whole lot better than nothing.

On the gear shifter I managed to get a microfiber around the shifter, never really thought of shifting it down .

I think I may have forgot that strip on all four doors.

As far as the Simple Green, you've had bad experiences with this? I've used it on about five vehicles with no problems so far. What would you recommend as a good APC replacement?

When the owner drops it into gear and see's cookie crumbs in the gear shifter, they will say, "Hey, he missed something" I wouldn't sweat it to much though at this point.

Next time, when you do drop the car into neautral be absolutely sure you apply the emergency brake. One time I was cleaning an Acura for a friend and my phone rang, I jumped out of the car to answer, and the car rolled down my driveway, took out a section of my neighbors fence and ripped the passenger door off

Castrol Super Clean (purple bottle) or Purple Power (white bottle) is what you should be using for APC

Door jams are super important to get spotless too. Even the part most won't see (bottom)

PS...did you clean the gear shifter knob?

Sure did. I took the after photos at night and used flash, so the lighting is all messed up...just look at the way the light reflects off those seats.

Nice turn around, Ted. I hope I do as well when I turn one loose to the group.

It was tough to see the vent-vanes. Can't tell if those were missed or if it's flash. A q-tip could also help with the sliders/CD opening on the radio. Looks like a little fuzz or dirt survived.

For no extractor the carpets and seats look great. Is that where the Simple Green was used?

Thanks! I actually used the 303 fabric cleaner on the carpets and seats; works great! Prolly gonna write a review on the stuff after a few more weeks of testing.

I have used simple green on carpets before, and with great results. I just hate the way the smell combines with the dirt and lingers. I used the Simple Green on the bad trim, especially the shifter area.

The guy who owns this car is one of my bosses, and when I went to work today he told me after his mom saw the car, she wants her vans interior detailed. So next week when my new wet/dry vac comes in I will clean hers up. I'll use update this thread with the results and hope to get more constructive feedback to further improve my thoroughness.

I hope the word spreads the more I do this... I would at least like to break even after taxes if not profit. :xyxthumbs:
