Hey guys, just wanted to share my latest paint correction with you. This customer apparently decided it was a good idea to use the rough side of a dish washing sponge to scrub their vehicle clean. Probably looked fine until it dried!

Funny part of this story...is that the customer originally called and made an appointment for just a "few scuffs on the hood, and drivers side front fender. Well, once I brought it inside...there was clearly a little more than that going on, ha. This is what it looked like before...

Once I saw this...I obviously had to make a call and not only up my price, but also reschedule this customer to another day where I can have the time to spend on it.

My method and products are as follows. Obviously washed the vehicle first. Did an ONR wipe down, then clayed every inch of the vehicle. I then ran some test spots to figure out what approach I should take. I quickly found out that compound is just not enough for a lot of these panels. Especially the hood, roof, and top of the trunk. It seems the person who did this really put some weight into those areas.

The sides didn't appear to be as beaten up aside from a couple spots that were obviously agitated more than others. The hood, roof, and top of the trunk were wet sanded using a block, and some 2000 grit sand paper. I then removed the scratches with my Makita, a wool pad, and Malco Tru-Grit compound.

Compound was followed by Megs 205, and a medium cutting pad. I chose the medium cutting foam pad cause I felt it wiped out the compound swirls with ease...and being that I was dealing with a really light color...it worked great. To finish up, I used my PC to lay down a coating of WGDGPS. The results were a LOT better than I had originally hoped for. Here's the after shots.

And of course...the shot everyone waits for, ha. There wasn't too much sun that day. But it was poking it's head out real quick for a nice reflection shot. :dblthumb2:

This car pretty much took me about 7-8 hours to complete. I didn't think that was too bad considering my situation. :buffing:

Wow great job Kris! But it looked like they bear you to the sanding part haha!

Did they say what their thought process was in using that to wash it???

Nice job Kris! And 7-8 hours is quick! That probably would have taken me double that.

I have an Avalon just like that, Silver paint. How hard did the clear coat seem to you? Mine seems pretty hard for a Toyota, I used UC and Megs Polishing 2.0 pad, and it took sooo many passes to barely wipe the swirls out. I even tried a Orange CCS pad with UC and it again it just could not knock out ALL the swirls. Probably needs a rotary and some 105/205, which I have yet to buy. I did recently buy the MF pad system so i'll give that a try.

I hope you set them up with follow up wash service, so they don't damage it again.

Looks like you missed a spot on the lip of that fender. That oughta buff right out. :D

A former GF picked up some sap on her black Hyundai and was headed for the garage with one of those sponges with Scotchbrite on the back when I caught her. Good thing, I'd just done a full correction the week before I probably would've been tempted to wetsand HER if she would've done what she was about to do.

Real nice save on the finish-abuse. I've got no idea how you pros do what you do in the time you do it. Maybe you're not taking frequent breaks to tap on the keyboard like some of us. :D

Nice job Kris. In the picture of the roof you can really see from the scratch pattern exactly how the arm movement was. Haha.

I hope you gave your client some tips on car care!

Yeah, I guess you could say the clear was pretty tough. I mean it took my toughest compound, and a wool pad to get the sanding marks out. The areas I just compounded were definitely a little tough. Took a few passes in a lot of cases. But, not impossible! :dblthumb2:

I hope you set them up with follow up wash service, so they don't damage it again. Well, the messed up thing was...the car was from FLA. Guys son drove it up here to visit his mom....and realized all the scratches. It was actually pretty nice of him to pay me to fix that. It might have been from FLA...but don't tell Mr. Phillips I stole his work! haha

Thanks man! Yes, if you guys spot anyone about to do this...immediately slap them. haha

Yes, I told them to use a touchless car wash from now on. I would have explained the proper way to wash a vehicle yourself...but I think it's safe to say that a car wash may be better in this case, haha.
